The Best Bad Luck

Chapter 8

I open the spare room door to a grinning Tom, "what the hell!" I scream jumping back a little "sorry, I'm just happy you're back!" Tom grins hugging me tightly.

After I manage to escape Tom's death grip, I have a quick shower (well let's be honest. A long shower) and walk into the living room, settling down with my laptop and earplugs, I roughly hear what seems to be Tom and Dan yelling a goodbye.

About half way into editing my script I feel the end of the couch sink, trying to shrug it off I continue my editing, Jack moves to the middle seat and leans on his arm trying to get my attention. "Yes?" I ask pausing my music and taking out my earplugs "I'm borrrred" he responds stretching out the r, "hi borrrred I'm Lila, nice to meet you" I grin at my awful joke. "Seriously, let's do something" Jack says excitedly "well we could... Make a blanket fort?" I suggest thinking it won't be much work.

I sat in the small dark cave that Jack and I created, browsing through the movies on my laptop (that I defiantly got legally...) while Jack is getting us snacks. The 'doors' open and Jack comes in with popcorn. "Hey, come help find a movie" I say tugging on the arm of his tee shirt "how about... The Vampires Assistant?" Jack suggests and I nod, clicking play I lean onto Jack's shoulder.

After the movie we stay in the blanket fort, the popcorn bowl lost somewhere below our feet, me still leaning on Jack's shoulder, my laptop sitting beside me. "That was a good movie" I comment sitting up, a sudden coldness hitting the side of my face "yeah" Jack replies obviously not focusing. I turn towards him a little more getting his attention, "penny for your thoughts?" I jokingly ask expecting to get a smart arse comment. "Would you push me away if I tried to kiss you?" Jack says after a minute of silence, I was about to say no when a knock at the door interrupts me.

Jack tells me he'll be right back and to start taking down the fort. As I'm folding the blankets I hear two pairs of feet entering the lounge room "hey Lila" a voice that is definitely not Jack's voice says, I turn around and almost drop the blankets. Of course Lila, Jack's perfect girlfriend. The one that he almost cheated on because of you. I felt sick to my stomach. "hey Amber, I'll leave you two alone." I faked smiled, doing an eyebrow nudge to Amber so it seemed like I wanted them together.

Dumb, dumb Lila. She's trying her hardest to get things the way they were and you come in and almost let him cheat on her? Should I tell her? No, just keep your distance... leave. This is why I can't be left alone. Because right now, leaving sounds like a good idea.

After a while someone knocks on my door. Instead of yelling 'come in' like a normal person, I get up and open the door a crack. It's Jack. "Can we talk quickly?" he whispers. "Yes?" I ask getting comfortable on my bed "about before-" Jack starts but I cut him off "it's okay, I understand" his eyes light up "you do?" he asks doing a small smile, "yeah. You're going through a rough patch with Amber, and you either wanna get out of it, or you wanna see if she's right by..."I cut myself off not knowing where I was going. I look up at Jack, the light in his eyes were gone "how did you think of that?" Jack asks "I... I see behavior easily" I shrug trying to make sure that I don't reveal that Amber told me. "No, I... I really-" Jack starts but then stops as he hears a knock on the door, "Tom and Dan are in the driveway" Amber say opening the door quickly to make sure that we weren't doing anything. She knows that we didn't need to know that... she just wanted to make sure that I wasn't trying to steal Jack. "Okay, I'm gonna go out there" I smile trying to avoid the situation. As I'm leaving the room I hear them arguing.
