The summers were too hot, the winters were too cold.

Every other day it rained.

Jack didn't exactly love the weather in New York City.

He bet in Santa Fe things were different.

"Hey Jack!"

They were different because he wouldn't be there.

"Heya Dave!" Jack grinned, "Lousy headline today, huh?"

David Jacobs glanced up at the circulation board, a distasteful look on his face.

"They're lousy everyday Jack." The taller boy rolled his eyes.

"True, but it won't be no fun if we get an interesting headline everyday." Jack laughed. "It makes our brains think much more than if we went to school."

"Speaking of which." David frowned. "My dad's almost better, I think I'll be back in school within the month."

"The month!?" Jack felt his eyes widen.

"Yeah." David looked away.

He had begged his parents to let him stay. To make Les go back to school instead, his brother's education was more important than hi-

Who was he kidding?

He wanted to stay because of Jack, because of Crutchie, and Race, and Albert, and Blink, all the newsies.

....but mostly Jack.

His sister wouldn't go back to school, she'd probably continue her job, so why did David have to go back?

"Well," Jack put on a brave face. "let's make the most of it, right?"

"Right." David nodded.

-

"Hey Jack." David spoke softly. "You're shaking, are you okay?"

"Do people normally shake when they're alright?" Jack chuckled weakly.

"No." David deadpanned.

"There you go then." Jack shrugged, "extra extra!"

"Jack-"

"What?" Jack sent a sly smirk the taller boy's way, only cutting it off when he had to sneeze.

"You can give the rest of your papes to Race for today, huh? Then you can come over and rest." Davey wrestled the newspapers out of Jack's hands, which would have been harder if the brown-haired-boy wasn't about to fall over.

"Bu-"

"Uh." David put a finger over Jack's lips.

"But-"

"Nope." David began dragging the whining man-child to Brooklyn.

"The boys-"

"Racer's got it!" Davey smiled.

"That's my nickname for him." Jack grumbled, but let himself be dragged to Sheepshead anyway.

"You need time away from the newsies." David pointed out. "I know you love them, I mean- I do to of course, but they can be..."

"Extra, annoying, extra annoying, stifling?" Jack volunteered.

"Big words, but yes." David nodded. "You can stay at my place for the we- night."

"Fine." Jack relented.

"Hey Rac-" Davey jumped back when he saw the blonde-haired-boy pull away from a make out session with a redhead.

He jumped back even further when he realized the redhead was Albert.

"I did not need to see that." Jack gagged. "My little brother making out with his best friend- boyfriend- whatever this is." He made wild hand gestures.

"Code red we've been exposed." Race whisper yelled.

"Code blonde, I can see that!" Albert rolled his eyes fondly.

"Moving on." David wrapped his arms around Jack. "Jack's sick."

"Oh I knew that." Race shrugged. "You just reali-"

He was cut off my a series of heavy coughs from the older boy.

"That sick." Race's eyes widened.

"What sick did you think he meant!" Albert turned on his lover.

"I thought he meant like, cruel sick! Like, meanie sick!"

"This is who you want to leave Manhattan too?" Jack sent David a judgmental look.

"You're the one who put him as second in command." David put his hands up.

"I lost a bet." Jack grumbled.

"No you didn't." Race and Albert stopped arguing. "You said these words, and I quote! 'Racer, my baby brother, I-'."

"That's enough!" Jack shushed the younger boy. "He's delirious!"

"I'm not the one who's sick!" Race waved his hands around.

"I'm not the one who got the wrong definition of 'sick'!"

"It counts as a definition."

"Alright alright! Ladies!" Albert pushed the two apart. "We get it! You're both stupid!"

"I'm your leader!" Jack waved his hands around.

"I'm your boyfriend!" Race flailed his hands around too.

"You both are about to be neither." Albert scoffed.

"But Albie."

"I'll make sure Race doesn't do anything stupid." Albert reassured Davey.

"Hey! Why me!" Race crossed his arms.

"Because you have stupid thoughts!" Albert countered.

"You have stupid thoughts too!" Race huffed.

"I think 'em." Albert pointed out. "I don't do them."

Race let out a long sigh.

"Great, see you guys tomorrow!" David waved, dragging Jack out of Brooklyn.

-

"I'm cold." Jack whined.

"Take this." David rolled his eyes fondly, tossing a sweater out of his drawers.

"Thanks Dave, you're the best." Jack smiled.

"You won't be saying that when Les gives you the death glare for taking up our bed."

"It's worth it, cause I'm here with you right now," Jack talked almost deliriously, or if he was drunk.

David felt himself grinning, as he tossed Jack another blanket.

"Look, I know we don't have much time together." Jack put his hand on top of David's wrist to stop him from ruffling through his drawer. "But I love you David Jacobs, I want you to know that."

"So you do know my real name." David laughed.

"'Course," Jack scoffed.

"For the record, I love you too." David pressed a kiss to Jack's forehead. "No matter where we are."

He broke into quiet giggles when he heard Jack snore, knowing the leader of Manhattan was knocked out.

His leader of Manhattan.

His Jack.
