"He was...alright," Mercer answers me as I continue to play in his hair as he gets more comfortable between my bare thighs. "We had a few awkward moments when he was calling himself "bonding" with us."
I hummed, my fingers braiding three sections of his hair while I listened to him tell me more about the road trip that he took with Vince and Adrian. We were in his-or our, as he calls it-room, relaxing in bedclothes. The sleep shirt I wore gave him access to bare skin. From what I've gathered so far, Vince was trying to make up for the years he lost, Mercer was still uncertain, and Adrian was... I didn't even know. The guy was hard to read at times, except when it came to Jules, his mother, or Skylar.
"Did you ask him questions?" I feel Mercer tense. "Have you talked to your mother?" I asked in a softer tone.
The way Mercer's body tenses up again lets me know his answer right away. His verbal response only confirms it. "No," he murmurs.
"You have to talk to her at some point, Mercer," I say, finishing up the braid before moving on to other pieces of his hair. "You need answers."
"I have-"
"Don't tell me that it was that time she had a sit-down with all three of you. You told me there was so much more she had to say, but it was clear to her that she wasn't going to drop everything on you guys all at once."
He doesn't say anything right away. He rubs my skin but I know that he was listening. "When I find the courage to."
My chest constricts. Mercer had to speak with his mother. In actuality, all of the Petrov siblings required their responses; otherwise, they would continue to wonder and would never learn the truth.
"You don't need courage," I said, crouching down and kissing his head. "Despite everything, I know she really does want to make things right. You don't realize how intricate the relationship between her, Vince, and Vaughn is. Sit down with her and talk to her, baby."
Mercer's hold on my thigh tightens, but not to the point where it's uncomfortable. Another sign of letting me know that he was hearing me.
A firm knock gets our attention before the door opens. Jules enters, but instant worry filled me when I saw the look on her face. She was hesitant and looked uncomfortable.
"What's wrong, Jules?" I questioned.
"Someone's here to see you and I don't think you're going to like who it is."
"Who is it?"
Her eyes move to Mercer before back to me. "Your dad."
My dad?
What was he doing here? And this late?
Tapping Mercer's shoulder, he moves, giving me enough room to slip off the bed. Walking out of the room, I headed straight for the stairs, knowing that Mercer was right behind me.
