"Gather around!" Coach Miles shouts from the center of the field.

My legs burned, my body felt sticky, and my heart was pounding so hard against my chest. Every time I return to practice, there is something new that the team does, and results in my body being sore and tired.

Jogging along with the rest of my team, we stop when we are all circling around him. Coach Roberts approaches with the same resting mug on his face. Despite his facial expressions suggesting that he was unapproachable, he was actually a good coach that genuinely cared about our well beings.

"All right," begins Coach Roberts. "As you are all aware, our seniors have been winning our August games over the last month. I know some of you have been wondering when you'll be put in the game, and this Saturday is your chance to show us how you've taken what we've taught you so far and applied it to the game."

"Now that we're in the first week of September, we're expecting a lot from you," Coach Miles says. "We haven't lost a game yet this season, and our goal is to reach the championships."

I paid close attention to what both of them were saying, and I couldn't help but feel a wave of excitement rolling over me. I've been patiently waiting for game days to roll around.

"For this entire semester of total games, there are roughly four or five games left for you girls," Coach Roberts claims.

My bubble had burst in an instant. What did he mean specifically by four to five games? Many of the girls expressed their displeasure, but neither of the coaches seemed to care.  Coach Miles was the first to speak up.

"Calm down," he states. "I can tell from the majority of you that you thought this was high school just by looking at you. We frequently have to explain things like this. Compared to college soccer, high school soccer is completely different. Our games are distributed according to semesters. The months of summer and fall are June through October, and a total of 18, possibly 19, games are typically played. Prior to starting the summer and fall semester games, our spring semester runs from April to May and consists of 8 to 9 games. Because of the time you all arrived, which is now your fall semester, your games now start differently as freshmen. Even if you participate, your inclusion on the team won't be guaranteed until your spring semester."
