"Again!" Coach Miles shouts the irritation in his voice is unmistakable.
My legs were burning and my head was beginning to hurt with all the tension building from the tight ponytail I had. My dreads were detained in a tight braid and the sun shone brightly. It was hot and not a good combination with how we practiced.
I feel I might pass out at any given moment.
The coaches were switching days and Coach Miles was head of the team his job was to get us in top shape before gaming season began. I would think we would be ready but with all the scrimmages and Coach's irritable words, we weren't even halfway ready for the real games.
My assumption of Coach Miles is to make everyone miserable. He might be dealing with some personal issues. It's unclear but I did know that he was taking whatever it was that he was dealing with on us.
It's impossible to confront him without setting him off so we keep silent but one day, I just have that feeling that one of us will snap.
"I'm calling it," Coach Miles grunts in displeasure. "Go home and rest up. We have one more practice before the first game of the semester. See you next Friday." He shakes his head and gathers his things.
Looking around, I could see the girls biting back a sigh of relief and it was not because of the weekend.
I gathered my belongings and followed the girls to the changing rooms. Instantly, I'm hit with the loud chatter of girls' complaints and comments on Coach Miles and his behaviors.
"It just seems like he's getting worse," A girl by the name of Tiara speaks up. "I just don't get it."
"Rumor has it that he's going through a divorce." Shelby, another girl on the team, comments.
"Divorce? He's married?"
"Girl, yes," A girl by the name of Vivian speaks up this time. "Probably why he's riding our ass because he made the mistake of cheating on his wife."
I stopped at my locker and twisted the little knob with my combination.
"I heard it was a skimpy girl." Vivian continues.
I shake my head as the realization dawns on me. I felt like gossip followed me everywhere I went. The moment Brooke stepped inside the locker room, all conversation stopped. She appeared worn out and appeared to be struggling to stand.
"Are you okay, Brooke?" I asked, walking over to her.
She waves her hand, nodding her head. "I'm alright, thank you."
"Coach has been riding your ass," Vivian acknowledges, observing her closely. "And Clara. I wonder what you guys did to piss him off."
I nearly blew out a raspberry. Over time, I learned that Vivian was one of many who liked to point out the obvious.
