Los Angeles International Airport
Exit.

I scanned the airport, observing people as they interacted with friends and family. Some are even questioning the employees. I heard someone grunt in pain behind me, and when I turned to face London and saw her fumbling with her bag, I could not help but smile.

"I said a weekend."

"Yeah," London huffs. "I need everything that's in here. I'm taking advantage of this get away."

I smiled wider.

Over the number of weeks that have passed, London and I have become close friends. She volunteered to come along with me when I told her about my next arranged visit with Mercer. Fortunately, I got an email from my professor telling us to spend the rest of the week working on our drafts since she was leaving town for a conference. In contrast to my other four professors, easy. I managed to write a little excuse on that Thursday so I could find an early flight.

Of course I've finished early and there was not a soccer game this week. I called Mercer and told him about my schedule and we came to the conclusion that it would be the best time to spend some time with each other.

The intention was for me to travel alone, but London volunteered to go with me. I realized, though, that her true motivation was to take a vacation from her role as a mother, which she so openly shows her love for. Elias, her boyfriend and the father of their child, offered to remove the priceless jewel from London's and her parents' possession.

"I'm sure Elias understood."

"Yes," she said, pausing. "Perhaps I seemed to eager." A look of worry crossed her features. London takes out her phone, pushing back a stray strand of her orange-colored hair behind her ear. "I should call them. My baby must think I abandoned her."

Reaching out, I linked arms with her. "I'm sure they're fine."

Exhaling a slow breath, London shakes her head and slips her phone back in her pocket.

"You're right," she says, smiling. "I just haven't been away from my baby girl for more than a day since the day she was born."

"Never?"

"No." Her smile broadens. "But it was bound to happen someday. One day, you'll understand."

With a raised brow, my lips parted in response.

"Uh-"

"Let's go!" She pulls me towards the exit of the airport and we go and find our ride.
