The shift in the atmosphere when I see the seriousness in her eyes enhances the moment I close the empty rooms upstairs. Regardless of the slight buzz I felt, I knew something was wrong.
Red moved to where the desk in the corner was and took a seat in the empty chair. I leaned against the door that had no lock to ensure that no one came in as I stared at my girl intently. Someone made her upset. She was fine before she went to the bathroom after our venturous time in the maze.
"What's the matter?"
"I know you said it's nothing to worry about but I just can't," she sighs.
"Red-"
"I had a run-in with Harlow on my way out of the bathroom." She taps her fingers in a rhythm on her thighs.
My brows furrowed together.
"What happened?"
"We had some exchange of words and let's just say that I believe she doesn't want to be just your friend, Mercer." Her eyes hold a seriousness that I'm all too familiar with. "She likes you."
Confusion washes over me as I register her words. That's impossible. Harlow can't like me. We have an agreement of a sort and she was going to help me. Nowhere along the way did she try to make a pass at me. Well, excluding the first time we met.
"She's just someone helping me out with football, baby." I push off the door, taking a step in her direction. "Harlow doesn't like me."
Red scoffs, standing to her feet. She pauses and gives me a fixed look before saying, "She does too." You are not truly that blind. She talks about you as though she cares for you in the same way that someone who likes someone would, and she looks at you whenever she gets the chance. It's infuriating."
The buzz I was on was slowly slipping. To be honest, I didn't fucking care about Harlow nor did I care about the subject of this conversation. What I couldn't understand was why my girl was bringing up the same subject, Harlow, when I told her there was nothing to worry about in the maze.
"Ignore her."
"Ignore her?" She crossed her arms, furrowed her brows, and scrunched up her nose in such a way that I found her fucking adorable. "I can't just ignore her, Mercer. And neither should you. What if she tries something with you? What then?"
Her rambling continued and the buzz that made me feel good faded completely as irritation instantly consumed me. In a few strides, I closed the space between us, cutting off her rambling with her chin held between my thumb and pointer finger.
"Nothing is going to happen," I said, pinching the delicate skin once. "Stop worrying about it, Red. You'll drive yourself crazy for nothing."
She tenses beneath my hold and I instantly regret the words that had the effect.
