"What!?" My mother had exclaimed.
I also was taken aback by his words as they felt so straight forward and out of the blue.
"I want to marry your daughter" he repeated again.
Everybody was silent at that moment that you can even hear the drop of a pin if you listen good enough.
"Sir, we admire your sincerity but our dear little keethana is just a child, she is seventeen years of age of I'm not mistaken" the mayor spoke softly.
"Isn't that keethana?" he asked me.
"I am seventeen going on eighteen next week" I said proudly.
I was told that once you reach eighteen, you will be right for marriage and so, I had said it proudly.
But I was still as confused as everyone as to why Mr Svaboda had all of a sudden announced that he wanted to get married to me.
"I don't mean to be rude Sir, but why do you want to get married to my daughter?" My father had asked.
"I love her, I've never felt this kind of love towards anyone for a very long time, not since after my dear wife passed away" he said sadly.
Being the empathetic society that we were, we all sympathized with him.
"And I also feel that my son would like her company, the little child has been so lonely" he had said.
All that he was saying, my mind was only stuck at the fact that he had declared his love for me out in the public and that made me realize that all those strange feelings that I was having all this while we're actually love.
I did love him too but it only took his confession for me to realize that.
"We are really sorry for your loss Sir but..." That was my mother speaking.
"She is still young to get married and also,..." But she was cut off by him.
"As far as I know in your community, a girl reaches the age of marriage by eighteen and dear keethana here is going to be eighteen next week, so I am just only asking you to accept my proposal" he said.
"Or do you have any objections and if so, then I might have to work harder?" he asked.
He didn't show any sign of giving up.
"But what about your age gap, I'm sure you are almost as old as her father?" she asked.
"Age is just a number, I doesn't matter when it comes to terms of love, isn't it keethana?" he asked me.
"Yes, I agree with you sir" I said.
That had earned me a glare from my mother. The most horrible that I've ever seen on her face.
"And not to mention that you have only met her today, this is not good enough to know her well enough to get married to her or even fall in love with her" she still argued.
"This is called love at first sight ma'am and I fell in love with your daughter the moment I saw her, I loved her spirit, her enthusiasm and everything about her" he said.
"And I'm sure that there are some couple that didn't even fall in love and still, they are married and the that, I would take my time to woo your daughter until she has finally accepted me too and then we'll get married" he said.
That speech of his really did make me blush.
My mother was about to pour out her million reasons as to why we couldn't get married but the mayor intervened.
"I think that would be a great idea" he said while giving my mother a warning look.
She just sat there and said nothing again but I could feel that she was fuming inside.
And to make matters worse, my father didn't also stand up to support her even though he wasn't supposed to outspeak the mayor.
"Let's all cheers to this joyous occasion and this wonderful union" he said and everyone made a toast.
I for once was very happy. Being with him meant that I would be out of this town and will finally get the adventure that I've always wanted and not to talk, all the love I would be showered with.
Can any person's life be any better, I had thought.
We all ate and drank and then after that, we all stood up and dance. Mr Svaboda even danced with me. I wasn't much of a good dancer but he was so patient and tried to keep up with my phase.
But the horrible thing started when we got back home, after Mr Svaboda had dropped us and went away, mother just started packing our clothes, saying that we were leaving this town.
For all I know in my life, she has only been in this town for her whole life.
And where did she even think we would be going?.
My father tried to reason with her, saying that we had nowhere else to go but he was only given a piece of her mind for not speaking up earlier.
And then, I did the unthinkable. I told my mother that I am also in love with Mr Svaboda and I would get married to him come what may.
She has always wanted me to get married sooner and now that I had someone who loves me, she was giving unnecessary reasons.
That night, I was given the beating if my life by my mother but that still didn't change my decision to get married to the man I am in love with.
The next day, I couldn't even wait to get off bed as Mr Svaboda had promised to take me for a ride that day.
I didn't tell my parents about it, especially my mother or she would have found a way from stopping me to meet him again.
That day, he took me for a ride, even though it was still around the same places I've been roaming for the past few years of my life, but it still felt special that I was with him.
And everybody in the town was happy for us, except my mother of course.
**********
The past few days went by in a blur and that faithful day they name today was my birthday, as I turned eighteen that same day.
I was made to stay in the mayor's house the other night and I was given all the treatment only the rich could get.
Many weddings happened in our town but this wedding was a one to talk about and I was more than happy to be the bride.
Some people from out of town were even called to do my hair and apply my make-up.
Even the dress that I wore that day was made from another country and I was sure it was made from the silkiest organza fabric you have ever set your eyes on.
Everyone was working on my wedding happily, except for one person of course, my mother.
She said that she is against the wedding and would still be. I wish I had known her reason back then.
But she was made part of the wedding anyways.
As the mother to the bride, she had to perform all her duties which she did under the insistence of the mayor.
Ok, now back to how my wedding actually took place.
I could remember it vividly how I was drove from the mayor's house to the venue in a limousine but not anything that you have ever set your eyes on as this one does not have any wheels. It just kept on floating mid air.
It was like it had an anti gravity thing of some sort that's making it float.
I was scared to even ride it in the first place but then as I entered, I felt as comfortable as comfort could ever be. The interior of the car was designed in such an exquisite way such that it looks more like a bar than a car.
There are four seats both facing each other and then there is a table in the middle of the chairs.
And on top of the car, where the wind shield was supposed to be, stood a collection of wine and some wine glasses.
All you had to do was just reach up your hand and then it would be yours.
I was so engrossed in admiring the car that I didn't know we had reached the venue until the car was opened and the light intruded my eyes.
I was escorted out of the car and to say that I was amazed was an understatement of the year.
He had actually chosen the beach as our wedding venue.
I had once told him that I dreamed of having a beach wedding where the water waves will be clashing against the shore while the guests were applauding as the couple kissed but I didn't even think he was listening as he was busy on the phone at that moment.
The place had been decorated with flowers, lots and lots of it.
While in the middle was a pathway that will lead we directly to the alter, where he stood waiting for me as well as the mayor, who had took it upon himself to minister our wedding.
I kept on admiring the beauty of the place that I didn't even know when my father stood besides me.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" he asked.
I just nodded at him, as I was speechless for once in my life.
Just a little bit farther away from the wedding venue, the reception venue was arranged and it was just as exquisite as the wedding venue.
All arrangements were done delicately but in a very professional manner.
It would have even looked much more better than that if not for the wedding being on a short notice.
My father brought me back to earth once again by holding onto my arm.
"Let's go" he said.
I followed him as well walk down to the aisle.
It was said that every bride looks up to this moment and when it's finally here, she feels as nervous as hell and that wasn't an exception for me.
My hands started to feel all sweaty but thanks to the hang glove I was wearing, no one could notice.
I mean, the whole town and more were there, watching as I take the steps to my destiny.
I looked up to him and I saw him in his white six pieces suit. He is wearing a black tie inside and a cream shirt. His long sexy legs were covered with white trousers and his clothes made him look like an angel. My angel.
I looked for all nervousness and found none as all I was thinking of at that time was to finally get to the alter and be this man's wife.
The time seemed to be going in slow motion for a while, like it's doing that on purpose. Like it's trying to collaborate with my mother and get this wedding delayed or better called off.
But alas, I took the last step that led me to him.
My father took his hand off my hand and then he placed my hand on his.
I felt so happy that I almost jumped in joy but I tried all my best to refrain myself.
My father walked back to his seat and sat besides my mother. The front row was reserved for the family of the groom and bride and that's when I noticed that no one was seated where his family was supposed to be.
But it didn't bother be at all as I'm sure they must have been from afar and couldn't make it to the wedding as well.
And he took the whole town as his family, so there was no worries on that.
We took the wedding vows in front of the whole town and it was very exciting to tell you the truth.
"Now I have pronounce you husband and wife" the mayor/minister said.
I was so happy at that moment, really happy.
"Now you may kiss the bride" he added.
Mr Svaboda looked down at me and I blushed. I have never held hands with another man before let alone kiss one, so it was all a new experience to me.
He leaned in so slowly that I thought he was not ever going to reach my face but he did and our lips met.
I felt like I was in cloud nine and that moment, all the cells in my body came alive and for that short period of time, I felt whole. I felt complete.
The kiss was so short that I didn't want it to end but it did and he pulled away.
I didn't know I was blushing so hard until I placed my hands on my cheek and I felt the warmth, like literally.
After the wedding was finally over, we moved over to the reception area and everyone started enjoying themselves to the good music.
When it came to the time for us to cut the cake and feed each other, they brought forth two cakes.
I looked at him for explanation which I got one.
"Today is your birthday, so I thought we could celebrate it all together as well" he explained.
The first cake which was supposed to be my birthday cake was brought forth and the more was a huge decorated written on it that says 'Happy birthday keethana my darling'
"Awwn! It's so beautiful" I couldn't help but admire.
This was the first time that I had actually cut a real cake for my birthday as my parents couldn't afford such luxury and I did force them to either.
With his help, I cut the cake and everyone applauded.
I fed him the cake first and then my parents and then left the rest of the town to all take their share.
We also cut the second cake which was our wedding cake and feed each other.
He leaned down and placed another kiss on my lips and I just wished that the moment should not end forever but it did eventually.
Everyone enjoyed themselves to their hearts content that day till it was late and then the couple had to leave.
I was so tired of dancing that day that I didn't think I could ever dance again in my life.
When were heading for the car, he suddenly swept me off my feet and carries me bridal style. It was so romantic and I just rested my head on his shoulder.
I thought he was going to place me on the seat but he just made us seat there, with me on his lap.
And I wasn't complaining either because I love being on his lap and how his heat keeps radiating through my body.
I didn't know that I had actually fell asleep on his lap until I felt him tapping on my cheek lightly.
"Get up sweetheart, we have reached out destination" he said.
I slowly opened my eyes.
He helped me out of the car.
"Are we there yet?" I asked.
I didn't remember us boarding on a plane or anything but he has promised me that our honeymoon would be in the most prestigious country of then all, a country that is known for spreading love.
"No my sweetheart, we would be leaving first thing tomorrow but we'll be staying in this hotel tonight" he answered.
I opened my eyes widely and saw a huge enormous building staring at me.
'Paradise hotel' that's what was written in huge neon lights on the building.
The building must be at least hundred stairs tall or even more but no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find the end of it.
He held my hand and escorts me into the hotel while the chauffeur takes our car.
The interior of the hotel was so amazing. Really amazing I tell you.
All was decorated in golden and black. From the tiles, to the tables, to the beams holding up the building, to the waiting chair, to the reception desk and even the workers around.
Everything was so in harmony.
"Good evening Mr Svaboda, we have prepared the best room for you already for the night, do enjoy your wedding night" an elderly woman walked up to us and said.
"Thanks very much Nisha for arranging all this in such short notice" he said.
The woman just bowed at him.
"It's our duty sir and by the way..." She paused.
"Happy married life".
