The Journey to Personhood

Look at this daughter's design
She bends forward to serve
There when no one asked her to be
Feeds you when you forget to eat

"What a darling girl"
They say and you say
Does what no one asks her to
Puts us all before herself

"We would be so lucky"
They say, taking for granted their own
But you've seen her seeking her needs met too
And she's no longer the ideal design

Look at this daughter
Helping because she can't see you so stressed
Damaged when her help is questioned
"No one asked you to." It was her choice to be so fragile

Look at this woman
A daughter, a mother, but a person
Using her time and energy
For only anyone else

Look at this human's design
Intricate and helpful
Imperfect for her humanity
And she's learning to serve herself first
