Monday came in a blur. The skies were clear, the sun shining with a gentleness that was almost calming. Yet, for Gayoon, the day felt overwhelming. Her mind raced with thoughts of the recitation she had to face later, a mix of excitement and anxiety settling in her chest.
She quickly locked her unit and descended the stairs, feeling a pang of guilt as she realized she was running late. Yangyang had messaged her ten minutes ago, saying he was already waiting outside. She had promised to meet him on time, but it always seemed like the morning rush had its own agenda.
As she turned the corner, ready to apologize for being late, she was met not with the frustration she expected but with a beaming smile and a friendly wave from Yangyang.
"Were you up late last night?" Yangyang asked as he approached, handing her a bottle of energy drink. "You've been taking those often lately. Are you sure you're still fine?"
Gayoon accepted the drink gratefully and smiled. "I was up all night studying! Mrs. Han is a terror when it comes to recitations. I've been reading so much lately, but..." she trailed off with a soft sigh.
"Hey, you'll be fine!" Yangyang cheered, ruffling her hair with a playful grin. "Most of her questions are scenario-based, and my friend already had his last week. Based on what he told me, it's basically just A-B-C for you."
"Really?" Gayoon frowned. "You're expecting too much from me; please don't put that kind of pressure on me!"
Yangyang laughed and gestured for her to start walking. "But it's true! You weren't even fazed by the practicum last summer. You'll do great."
Gayoon laughed softly. "You have a lot of hope in me, don't you?"
"Because I know you can do it," he reassured, his words wrapping around her like a comforting blanket. Gayoon could only nod and smile in response, grateful for his belief in her.
They had been walking for three minutes when a car slowly pulled up beside them. At first, they didn't think much of it—cars were allowed to park there after all. But when they heard a honk followed by a loud voice calling her name, they both turned to see who it was.
"Gayoon! Thank God you heard!" Mark called out from the car, his head peeking out of the window.
"Mark Lee." Gayoon chuckled and walked toward him. "Why did you stop?"
"Hop on!" Mark grinned.
"Wha—"
"I know exercise is good for this nice weather, but I got permission," he explained, his grin widening.
Gayoon's confusion only deepened when she saw Jeno sitting in the passenger seat, waving at her. But it was the familiar dark eyes in the backseat that froze her in place.
Donghyuck.
He was sitting there quietly, his gaze fixed on her, his expression unreadable.
Gayoon didn't feel any sense of anger or discomfort from him, so she assumed he was simply being his usual, enigmatic self.
"So? What are you waiting for?" Mark called out, still grinning.
"Ahh, it's just..." Gayoon hesitated, glancing back at Yangyang. "I'm with my classmate."
