"Sir, here are the records from last week's case."
Donghyuck glanced at the papers handed to him.
"These were supposed to be reviewed by Lee Jeno's team first," he noted, raising an eyebrow.
"About that, sir—Mr. Jeno asked me to give them to you directly."
Donghyuck leaned back in his chair, fixing the assistant with a look.
"He said it's your turn to cover some of his work. He took the day off for his anniversary."
"Anniversary," Donghyuck repeated flatly, lips twitching in mild annoyance.
The assistant only smiled knowingly in response.
With a sigh, Donghyuck checked his watch, then the stack of papers, and finally back to the intern.
"Alright, fine. But can you do me a favor and pick up my daughter from school? You know where and who, right?"
"Yes, sir. Lee Eunjoo."
"Good. Drive safely, and please get her usual garlic bread on the way. Also, an iced Americano for me. You can grab something for yourself, too." He handed over his credit card.
"Rest assured, sir." The intern bowed and quickly left.
Donghyuck leaned back in his chair, shutting his eyes for a moment. He could only hope Eunjoo wouldn't be upset about not being picked up by him personally.
The recent case had been heavier than expected, leaving both him and his wife stretched thin. Driving Eunjoo to and from school had become a shared responsibility between them, though lately, even that balance was skewed.
As for covering Jeno's work? It had started as a way to help each other in times of need but had morphed into a running gag—a sort of unwritten competition.
The clock ticked loudly in his office as Donghyuck adjusted his glasses and continued jotting down notes.
Faint footsteps and muffled rustling outside broke the silence. The office walls were thick enough to block most noise, but there was no mistaking the enthusiastic volume of his four-year-old daughter.
"Papa, I got stars!" Eunjoo burst through the door, her voice bouncing off the walls.
Donghyuck smiled despite himself.
The assistant trailed behind her, attempting to shush the excitable child.
"It's fine," Donghyuck reassured with a small laugh. He waved his daughter over. "Let papa see."
Eunjoo raced to him, arm raised proudly to show off the five stars stamped on it.
"Wow! Did my princess top her recitation again?" Donghyuck asked, pulling her onto his lap.
"It was from the book Mama read with me last night," Eunjoo explained with a bright smile.
