When we arrived at (Y/N)'s home, I ran behind her as we attempted to avoid being soaked in the rain.

"Take off your coat. It's soaked," she said once we were through the door. I unbuttoned the coat and her butler took it from me and then she laced her fingers with mine.

"My dear, could I excuse myself to the restroom for a moment?" I asked.

"Do you need to fix your hair," she said before giggling.

"Cheeky," I muttered, kissing her forehead. She gave me a beaming smile with a light blush on her cheeks and then led me through the living room and opened a door.

"It's down this hall," she said, "Come meet in the kitchen."

"Alright," I said. She hurried away and I found the restroom and locked myself inside. I took out my to-die list and looked for her name. I didn't see it. I sighed deeply. She wasn't dying anytime soon at least. I made my way back to the kitchen and Lady (L/N) greeted me.

"How are you, Adrian?" she asked, smiling.

"I'm well," I said.

(Y/N) was giving her mother a strange look and I turned my gaze back and forth between them.

"I'm afraid you cannot stay for dinner, as (Y/N) wanted Adrian," her mother said finally, "We have been invited to dinner elsewhere."

"To a suitor's house," (Y/N) said bitterly.

"What?" I asked, slightly taken aback.

"He has a lot of money to offer and seemed to be very kind," Lady (L/N) said.

"Mother, you've already said you like Adrian. Besides that, I love him. I don't want to meet another suitor!"

(Y/N)'s face turned bright red and she avoided my gaze by glaring at her mother.

"(Y/N), I like Adrian as well, however, you must think about your financial wellbeing."

"Adrian will be working for Lord Phantomhive," (Y/N) said, "He will be plenty well-off."

"And at a high risk of death. (Y/N), you and I are far from fools. We know your father and Lord Phantomhive are doing dangerous work and they risk dying every day. I want you to have more security than that. I didn't approve of your father's job, but he's a stubborn man, so I have no choice but to let him live or dig his own grave."

"Mother, I'm already ill. I may not live long as it is. If my life is going to be short, I'm going to spend it with someone I love," (Y/N) said, "I'm just as stubborn as father is and you won't change my mind on the matter. You and father can go to dinner with whoever this man is, but I'm not. I won't even pretend to be courteous if I come."

"(Y/N)!" her mother said sharply, "The case was different when Adrian was simply an undertaker, but if he is going to be working for Lord Phantomhive, then I don't approve."

I knew that (Y/N) was going to live longer than she thought, but fortunately I didn't have to admit that and support her mother. With all due respect, I wasn't giving (Y/N) up to another man.

"Mother, I will not marry another man. Adrian will be my husband someday and even if we have to live secluded with just one another, I would do so gladly. He is all the happiness I need."

"And what about me and your father. Have we not cared for your and made your life wonderful? Have we not done everything we can to fill your life with happiness?"

"You have, but that doesn't mean you can decide to deny me happiness in something as important as love. It's not a give and take."

"You're marrying someone else. That's final!" Lady (L/N) screamed.
