I woke up in my room at my reaper house. Nicholas was sitting on a chair beside the bed with his arms crossed, tapping his foot impatiently.
"What?" I asked softly, my throat a bit dry.
"What are you doing spending time with humans?" he asked, giving me a glass of water, "What are you doing meddling in a human's life?"
I drank the water and sighed.
"How did you find out?" I asked.
"That! That's what you care about!" he cried, jumping upright and pacing around the room, "How did I find out? How did I find out? I found out when I followed your half-conscious arse back into the human world after the surgery to get a bullet removed from your heart! Where you went straight to a human girl, clinging to her, and then falling asleep with her! You said she was nothing important! A girl who you had to string along until you found a way to get away from her without causing her to become suspicious!"
"That was the plan. It's still the plan!" I lied.
"You're a terrible liar! Always have been! You've kept the braids in your hair that she gave you, you kept the flower crown she made you on the dresser right over there, you kept the coat she had made for you. What else have you been doing in the human world? No one's seeing you around the library as often, or really anywhere, so where the hell are you spending your time?"
"I'm just spending time to myself," I said, "I took on more hours, so I'm spending more of my free time inside sleeping."
"Fine. Fine, is that how we're going to play this?" he sighed, sitting back down, "I'll come back at random times during the day and I'll check and see if you're here. If you aren't here, or somewhere equally obvious, then I will go and ask the human girl to tell me everything and you know damn well, she won't hesitate to talk all about you if I tell her I'm a friend of yours. Lord knows women can't keep their mouths shut."
"She's not a stupid, air-headed woman. She's intelligent, and responsible, and she works harder to be treated better than any other women is. She's earned the respect of many people. She wouldn't spill everything about me because some random person claimed to be my friend." I spewed out like a drunk man, the anesthesia having its predictable effect on me.
"No, no, no," Nicholas groaned, putting his head in his hands.
"What?" I asked.
"You fell in love with a human? Why is it always you that makes things so difficult."
"I'm not in love."
"Shut it. You lit up when you bragged about her admirable traits. Why, why, why do you make things difficult?"
"How is this difficult for you? I'm the one who has to actually be in the relationship and keep her a secret from the rest of the dispatch!"
"Because you can't love a human who is going to die!"
"How do you know that?"
"I've seen her cinematic record in the library. She will die of her disease and it will be while she's young. You two won't have children, you won't have a life together, you will lose her and you will hate yourself for falling in love with her once she's gone. You'll blame yourself, wish you had done better, or think there was more that you could've done when there wasn't! This love will only end in tragedy and there's no way for you to stop that."
I stared in awe. Nicholas was almost in tears.
"It happened to you," I said softly, "You fell in love with a human."
"Do as I say, not as I do. Always, always live your life that way."
"I can't just stop loving her."
