After scaring my by flinging himself out the window, Adrian had left to help Lord Phantomhive with a task. I wasn't nearly so worried about this task though. It was the end of dealing with demons. A human, I was certain Adrian could handle.
I was preparing to go to bed when i heard our doorbell ring. I put a soft robe over my nightdress and walked downstairs to see who was there. Just as father opened the door, Mrs. Smith, the woman I babysit entered.
"Hello, Mrs. Smith, can I help you?" I asked.
"I know it's late and I'm terribly sorry, but could you please watch Genny and Alex for me?" She asked, "My husband was injured at work, not too badly, mind you, but I want to stay with him at the hospital and I don't want Genny and Alex just sitting around bored or scared."
"No, of course," I said, "Let me change."
"Would you please stay the night with them?" She asked, "They've already had dinner and just need to be ready to sleep and have someone in the house."
"Of course," I said, rushing upstairs to put on a dress.
Wearing a simple (F/C) dress and slippers, I checked to make sure I didn't forget anything. As I looked at my nightstand, I remembered something I had left within. I opened it and took out the gun and holster that Lord Phantomhive had given me some time ago. I put the gun in my purse, hid the holster under my bed and ran downstairs to join Mrs Smith. Better safe than sorry.
I joined Mrs. Smith in her carriage and as soon as we arrived, Genny and Alex flew out the door in their nightclothes and bare feet and gave me a hug.
"Get back inside. You're feet are going to freeze off," Mrs. Smith chided lovingly as Genny and Alex dragged me toward the house. She gave me a wave before getting back in the carriage.
"Are you ready to read stories?" I asked.
"Yeah!" They both cheered, racing upstairs to their bedroom. I followed behind and knelt down to their bookshelf to pick a story.
"Which one would you like?" I asked, as two pink cheeked, blanket-bundled kids peered out from under the cave covers playfully.
"The one about the knight," Gen says.
"Yeah!" Alex agrees.
Despite their apparent energy, they both fall asleep rather quickly. It must have been quite a long day. I make sure they're both tucked in tight, the blow out the candle in the room and shut the door behind me quietly. As I sit on the couch, their curious cat comes to cuddle with me. I pet her fluffy fur softly and close my eyes, allowing myself to get some rest.
After a time, the little ragdoll, Nana, named for her cuddly, affectionate nature, slipped away. I heard a clatter shortly after and sighed. For a graceful cat, she quite often knocks things over. It sounded like she knocked something over upstairs. I hurried upstairs, hoping Gen and Alex didn't wake up and thin there were monsters in the hall, however, as I walked upstairs, I noticed the door was open. It hadn't been open before. I looked down the hall and saw the window at the end of the hall was open and Nana had knocked over a vase nearby it.
I looked through the cracked door into the kids' room and saw a figure kneeled down, speaking softly to both of them. I took out my gun from my purse and pushed open the door, aiming directly at the figure's head.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" I asked.
The figure raised its hands and slowly stood up.
"Gen, Alex, leave," I said softly.
