Running was a skill that Will had never really ever needed to practice, which he regretted as he and Gilan were running away from the two kidnappers. They needed to get out of here, and quickly. These guys wanted something from Gilan, and Will knew that moralities for stuff like kidnapping hadn't stopped them.

Gilan was heading towards another door leading outside, then suddenly grabbed Will and pulled him aside. Hack Job lunged past them, just barely missing the boys in his attack.

"Okay, new plan," Gilan said, rolling his shoulders back and taking a stance in front of Will, holding his pipe so the end facing away from him was touching the ground. This guy was really going to try and fight him-?!

Hack Job stepped closer. Will saw the relaxed tension on Gilan's body, and recognized it as that of a cat's, ready to spring.

Hack Job ran up to them, and Will barely heard Gilan counting under his breath, "One, two, three, four, five-!" and then the sophomore swung the pipe up hard.

Slam.

Will winced, involuntarily cringing away as Hack Job fell to the ground, letting out a high-pitched whimper.

"There we go," Gilan said nonchalantly, twirling the pipe between his hands. "I knew that sword-fighting practice would come in handy."

Sword-fighting? But hadn't Horace said that Gilan fenced back during lunch?

...Never mind, questions later. For now, they had to get away from the guys who'd kidnapped them, then call the cops... Will put his hands in his pockets, and found his cell phone.

"Wait, you still have yours?" Gilan questioned.

"You don't?" Will asked.

"No," Gilan said, showing Will a thing that might've been a phone before someone took a hammer to it. "Guess they thought I might call someone I knew."

And Will wouldn't? He couldn't help feeling strangely offended.

But then again, he only had Mr. and Mrs. Evans, Jenny, and the newly added contact, Horace. The circle of people whose phone numbers he had was very small, though that was probably due to him not really hanging out with people.

"Come on, now," Gilan said, lightly pushing Will in the direction of the door. "We should probably go." Will rolled his eyes, but followed Gilan as he sprinted out the doors, as they transitioned into the bright sun. Blinking at the brightness, he could dimly hear screams from behind them, which Gilan was not acknowledging.

But now that they were outside... they were in some kind of empty lot, with no cars or trucks in sight. This didn't feel right...

Will opened his mouth to tell Gilan that thought as they reached the sidewalk but was surprised by a sudden crash from behind him. Will spun around, to see Snake Voice running towards them screaming.

But her face was filled with an emotion that Will could only think of as fear.

What...?

"Out of the way!" she shouted in panic, running between Will and Gilan, shoving Will to the side as she did. Will was confused more than freaked out. What was going on? He considered being worried about the thing his kidnapper was scared of, but then he started thinking. What could it be? Anyone coming to help? Did someone from her kidnapper group stage a revolt on the basis that they were kidnapping people?

"Oh, that's interesting," Gilan said mildly.

"Yeah," Will agreed. They stood next to each other, watching the building for another few seconds, before Will asked, "What do you think is going on in there? And why were they after you? And I can call someone to pick us up."
