WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO GO!

I jolt up in my bed as my radio clock blasts music. Groggily rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I hit the clock instantly cutting off the song. I look around the room and gather my thoughts. "Time to get up," I whisper to myself, and with a huff I get out of bed.  I grab a sweater and jeans and get dressed for school. I do my makeup and when I'm satisfied with what I see in the mirror I reach for my bag and leave my bedroom. Walking in the hallway towards the living room I stop by my sister's room and make sure she's up and ready to leave. I knock "Leaving in 5 minutes, with or without you." I warn. Dad is asleep on the couch when I see him in the den. I eye the bottles and I know he'll be nursing a headache all the way into the afternoon, so I head into the kitchen and bring back a glass of water for him. "This time next year I'll be at college, and you won't be my problem." I say silently to myself.

Finally, my sister comes tumbling out of her room, "Alright Julia, I'm coming, I'm coming, I'm here." She says with a sarcastic smile. I give her a look over; she looks like she rolled out of bed and grabbed the first thing she saw before smearing some eyeliner on. I don't even bother asking if that's what she's going to wear, I gave up on her grooming habits and fashion sense – or lack thereof a long time ago. We head outside and get into the car. She throws on her headphones and clicks play on the old cassette player mom left behind and I drive us to school.

In the parking lot of Hawkins High School, my sister runs off to join her clan of weirdos and I spot Steve and Nancy across the way. I start to walk over when I hear the screech of tires and loud music coming my way. I look over and see a car with California plates heading right toward me and jump back as it pulls into the space next to mine. I look on as I see him get out of his Camaro smoking a cigarette, a young girl gets out and skates past me and right towards the middle school. He takes a look at me and I wait for him to apologize for almost running me over, but he turns his head and walks away without saying a word. I drop my jaw in shock struggling to keep my cool. Instead of shouting at him I decide to walk over to Nancy who's watching what just happened. I can hear some girls talking about him, but I don't care. "What a jerk, he almost killed you!" Nancy shouts when I finally meet her and Steve. "You'd think he'd at least say something, but whatever," I say, shrugging off the near death experience. "Hopefully we don't run into him much after that incident." We hear the bell and make our way inside for class.

Homeroom and my first few classes fly by. I leave class with Jonathan and Nancy and we're handed flyers for a Halloween party. She quickly grabs a second one and hands it to Jonathan, and tries to convince him to come and I join her. I like that we've all started to hangout even though I'm not sure how or when they became so close. I always thought Jonathan was a little weird but Nancy really likes when he is around and now I think he's actually a really nice guy. I look down to inspect the flyer and chuckle at them while they argue. Nancy suddenly yelps and I look up to see Steve picking her up. I smile at them. We're all together in the hall and things are normal. After what happened last year to Jonathan's brother and Barbara, and of course when Steve and Nancy were going through what can only be explained as a lover's quarel, its nice to see everyone happy and joking around. I notice Jonathan getting uncomfortable when we're suddenly subjected to Steve and Nancy's very public display of how in love they are by making out in the halls, so I nudge him and he looks over to me. "Wanna give these two some privacy? I bet they wouldn't even notice." I whisper to him. He looks over at them and looks back to me and gives me a short nod. "yeah.. let's get out of here." He says under his breath, and we both head down the hall to our next period, leaving the lovebirds to their smooch fest on the lockers.

Jonathan and I chat for a little while before we split off, he's still got to get a few photos ready for the school paper and I have to get to my next class. I enter the classroom and see a few girls standing outside of the room, they're all peering inside to look at something... or someone. I look over in the direction of their stares and see, of course, the person who almost took me out in the parking lot this morning. I let out a groan, "seriously?" I mumble under my breath as I shove past the group of girls. I quickly take my seat and roll my eyes, 'this guy again? At least he can't almost kill me in the classroom' I think to myself. "Now class I know we're all ready for Halloween this weekend, but please, we are still in school so take a seat." the teacher starts, "Mr. Hargrove, you can sit behind Julia, and follow along." I let out a disappointed sigh and roll my eyes. "Is there a problem?" my teacher asks, and I look up to see he is staring directly at me. My eyes widen and I realize, 'shit, that was outloud. Great.' I recover and say "no, sorry Mr. Matthews." The teacher holds his gaze a moment longer and turns around and begins writing the lesson on the board. I feel something poke my back, I turn around and he's looking at me with a smirk. "I think I'm going to enjoy this class." He whispers and flashes a crooked smile. I huff and turn back around. 'That makes one of us,' I think to myself.
