Before I can follow Steve outside, Max grabs my arm. "If he sees you here with Steve, he'll freak. If he knows you're here and that I've been here the whole time he'll lose it. Just stay inside, he'll think I'm not here and look somewhere else." I think about what she's saying. Telling him is the only thing that would make everything make sense, but if they kids are right about it being dangerous for anyone who knows, I don't want him to be dragged into all this. If he doesn't know he'll be safe. I lower my head and quietly agree to do as she says.
While Billy and Steve are outside talking, the kids and I move away from the window so that they won't be spotted. I know Billy is a good person. He and Steve will just talk and Billy will leave. I'll get Max home and everything will work out. I peer out the window and try to listen. I watch as Billy takes off his jacket and stalks towards Steve. What is he doing? I've never seen him so agitated. I hear Billy, "My sister goes missing, and I find her with you," he points at Steve then to the house, "in a stranger's house, and you're lying to me." I hold my breath. He knows. I look back to the kids and they're no longer by the wall but they've crept up to the window. I pull away before Billy can see and try to shoo them away when suddenly their eyes widen and they duck down. "Shit!" Dustin shouts. "I think he sees us," Lucas adds. Oh no.
I hear a thud and Steve grunt, I look back out to see Billy standing over Steve. I gasp in horror as he kicks Steve in the stomach. I've never seen him like this. He marches up to the door and slams it open before we can react. He stares down the kids, scanning their faces. His glare lands on one of the boys and the look on his face twists in anger. He strides towards Lucas and towers over him. I watch on in disbelief. "I told you to stay away from him," he growls at Max. She tries to tell him to leave, but he persists. "You didn't listen, and you know what happens when you don't listen to me?" he leans closer to her, "I break things" he says before lunging at Lucas. I let out a yelp when he pushes Lucas causing a crash.
Billy freezes and his eyes shift over to me. I stare at him in shock. He looks back at me and tilts his head, confused and trying to piece together the image before him. He's dazed. He opens his mouth as if to say something but stops himself, turning his attention back to Lucas who's telling him to let go. When Billy aggressively tells Lucas to stay away, Lucas panics and kicks Billy. Billy backs up with a groan and threatens Lucas again. I'm still speechless at the scene in front of me when Steve walks in, looking at me and then Billy. He's seen enough and I watch as he walks over to Billy and grabs him, and in one swift motion he punches Billy in the face.
Billy lets out a laugh and Lucas runs to the others, I move to get between them and the fight that's sure to happen now. Billy is shouting and has clearly gone over the edge, I still can't believe what I'm seeing as Steve quietly tells Billy to leave. Billy stares at steve for a moment, he glances towards me, "Billy please." I try to plead with him. He looks away and suddenly throws a punch towards Steve. The fight starts and I'm shouting, begging them to stop, while the kids cheer Steve on. I watch as Billy reaches for a plate and scream, "Billy don't!" but he's already smashing it over Steve's head. He starts to over power him and I move the kids out of the way as they barrel past us. I try to pull Billy off of Steve but get pushed back during the commotion. I'm thrown to the ground and I don't know what to do.
Then I watch Max carefully approach Billy and she's holding something. I scream as she stabs him with a syringe. He collapses and she picks up a bat. I rush over to Steve to help him but he's barely conscious. I hear Max as she tells Billy to leave her friends alone, I snap my head to look over when I hear the bat hit the floor. My stomach turns, but I let out a quiet sigh of relief when I can see that she missed him but she threatens him again. "I understand" he finally sighs. Max lowers the bat and the kids help drag Steve out of the house. When the kids are outside, I cautiously move towards Billy. When he looks up at me he laughs a little then goes silent. I put a hand on his cheek. Dustin runs in, "are you coming?" he asks. I look up, "you want to leave him here?" I gesture to Billy laying on the floor. Dustin looks at Billy, then back outside, and then to me. "No shit!" Dustin shouts, stopping when he sees the concerned look on my face. I don't know if I should leave him here, but I don't know if I can be around him right now either...
"Stay here or come with us, but we gotta go now!" Dustin shouts again urgently. "And where are you planning on going?" I ask, my eyes widen when I realize, "No. no no no. You are not going through with your stupid diversion, you'll get yourselves killed." I protest, but Dustin starts to go back outside, "It's going to work! We've got to help Will!" He shouts back at me.
Billy's car door slams shut and it races off before I can try and stop them. "Are you kidding me?" I say loudly to myself. I look around and look back into the house. Billy still needs help. I start to walk back inside when I realize that Steve was out cold and couldn't possibly have woken up and driven off in Billy's car. I look back down the road where the car had already disappeared. "No," I shake my head, "they wouldn't." I stop and think again, "Shit."
