BRRRIIIINNGGG
English class is finally over, I put away my assignments and start heading out of the room. I can't believe I have to sit infront of this guy for the rest of the year, but it can't be helped. I'll just ignore him and he'll leave me alone. The girls are already gathering in the halls to catch a glimpse of him. Did they not see him being a total jerk this morning? I'm so distracted by my annoyed, yet totally justified thoughts I don't even realize my name is being called.
"Julia!" I snap my head around and see my sister. "Helloooo earth to Juliaaaa," I stare back waiting, wondering what she wants. "uh, yeah?" I ask her. "I've got plans so I'm gonna be with my friends after school. Don't worry I've got a ride and I'll be home late!" The words rush out of her and she runs off before I can respond. I watch as she dashes over to the group of kids she's been hanging around. Normally I would drag her home for hanging around guys like that, but they're harmless, they usually meet up a few nights a week and play games or play music at some bar. Better if she's sitting in a room with a few nerds than at parties getting drunk. I shrug and walk outside to my car.
When I get outside I'm annoyed to find the new kid standing by my car. "Can you move? You're in my way." He takes a puff of his cigarette and looks at me, letting out a low chuckle as I wait with my arms crossed. He finally shifts away from my car, still looking me over. "Can I help you?" I ask him, irritated that he's just staring and not saying a word. "Actually Julia, yes. Yes you can." He smiles and tilds his head in my direction. I raise my brows in shock and ask, "how do you know my name?" He smiles before letting out a laugh, "Uh in class? The teacher said your name," he shakes his head while looking down at the cigarette in his hand.
If he wasn't such a jerk this morning I'd almost think he had a nice smile, but I stand my ground. "Oh. Well, what do you want?" I wait for his response. he takes yet another drag off of the cigarette and finally says, "Well I don't know if you noticed, I'm new." He says sarcastically, "and Matthews says I need to catch up, so he told me I should borrow your notes." I quickly look him up and down with widened eyes and think to myself 'you? studdying? yeah okay.' I hand him my notebook and get into my car. "I'll need that back tomorrow for class, try not to ash on it." He smiles and tosses my notebook into his car and I drive away. "I'm gonna have to replace that notebook now," I say outloud to myself.

With my sister off with her friends, I run to the convenience store. Dad works so he never makes time to shop, unless its for beer. I pick up a few groceries and head over to the register. "Hey Julia, how was school?" Mrs. Byers asks. Before a year ago, we didn't really do small talk, but now since hanging out with Jonathan, we've kind of gotten to know each other. She knew my mom in school and she knows about Dad, so she likes to check up on me and my sister. It's gotten kind of nice talking with her, she's become almost a second mother.
"oh y'know, pretty normal day. Except that I almost got hit by this creep in the parking lot this morning." Joyce lets out a gasp, "Well did the little shit apologize?" I giggle at her, her protectiveness is pretty refreshing. "no, but it's alright I guess. I've just gotta be more careful now that I know he'll be terrorizing our streets." We talk a little more until someone interupts. "Hey can I get a pack of cigarettes?" My smile drops, I know that voice. 'Wonderful, just wonderful, I cannot wait until I no longer live in a small town,' I think to myself.
Joyce points, confirming the selection of all the known brands of cigarettes. "Well, hello there Julia." I turn and meet the blue eyes of the boy who's becoming a bigger thorn in my side. "Have we resorted to stalking now?" I say. He laughed, "I just dropped my step sister off and wanted to pick up a pack. No stalking, honest." He holds his hands up while making an X motion across his heart. I roll my eyes at his sickeningly sweet smile. Joyce finishes ringing me up, I pay and start to leave saying bye to her but not him. When I get out to my car he comes outside pulling a cigarette from a fresh pack. "Let me help," he says coming over to my car and carefully taking my bag from my arms. I watch, confused, as he puts the groceries into the car. "Um, thanks." I mumble to him when he finishes and turns towards me. "No problem," he half shrugs and lights the cigarette dangling from his lips. "Hey I gotta go, but I'll see you tomorrow." he flashes me a smile and walks in the direction of his car. 'That was oddly nice of him.' I think as I'm left confused by the unexpectedly kind act...
