Its Halloween. I get ready for the day and wake up my sister so that we can leave on time. Dad isn't in his usual spot, but in the kitchen. "Girls, I have to work tonight, so please don't get into trouble." Amelia laughs and rolls her eyes, "No worries, Jules never does anything wrong, and I'm gonna be studying with friends." She says with a shrug. I squint my eyes at her in suspicion at her casual comment about tonights plans. She's lying, her friends are playing tonight at some bar, but she knows I'm going to a party so I can't really say anything. It wouldn't really matter if I did though, Dad's never around so we pretty much do our own thing. We say bye to dad and leave for school.
This morning the new kid parks far away from me, not that I was taking any particular interest or anything. "Are you ready for the party tonight?" Nancy asks snapping me out of my thoughts. "Yeah I could really use it, I've been really stressed lately." She gives me a knowing look. "Is it your dad?" I shake my head, Nancy gives me a knowing look. My father spends most of his time at work and if he's not already at some bar, he's home drinking. Needless to say things have been tough since my mom left but now that I'm getting older its easier to avoid his drunken fits. "Not really, I'm kind of used to it now. I'm just ready for the week to be over that's all," I shrug it off. As Steve and Nancy talk about their costumes for tonight I head off to Homeroom.
The girls in class are all talking about tonight and I hear one of them ask, "Do you think he's gonna be there?" Another chimes in, "I hope so, he's so cute." I roll my eyes knowing who they're talking about. Everyone's going so he's probably going to be there.
Classes fly by and I'm about to head to English when I run into Nancy again. "Steve and I are going to ride together to the party tonight, do you wanna ride with us?" She asks. I think about it and shake my head no, better to make sure I have a ride than third wheel since I'm not sure if Jonathan is even coming yet. Even if he is, I should still drive so I have a way to get home incase its late. We agree to just meet up at the party and I head into class and take my seat.
Half way through the class I feel a tapping on my shoulder and of course, I turn around to see what he wants. "What?" I whisper. "I heard you talking with your friend, you're going to a party tonight?" He smiles at me. "Oh I'm sorry, were you not invited?" I ask him quietly with a sly smile "What a shame we won't run into each other" I say sarcastically. He chuckles at me, "Oh I'll be there, I just wanted to be sure I'd see you tonight." He smirks at me and I turn around rolling my eyes. Of course he's coming.
When the bell rings I grab my things and start to leave. "Hey," I hear behind me, "I feel like you don't like me much." I turn and see him smiling again. I let out a scoff and start to turn but he stops me, "Why is that?" He asks. I look at him and he looks genuinely curious. Is he serious? "You almost hit me with your car yesterday." I tell him with my arms crossed. "Thats it?" he asks. My eyebrows raise and I don't know what to say. 'That's it? really?' I'm about to turn to leave again and he grabs my wrist saying "wait." I look at his hand on my wrist and back up at him finally ask plainly, "What?" We look at each other for a moment, he sighs and lets go of my wrist, taking a step back. "I'm sorry. Let's start over. My name is Billy." He states while putting out his hand. I stare, confused for a second. He seems to really mean it, "Okaayy," I say slowly and accept his handshake, "I'm Julia." He smiles and gently squeezes my hand, "Its nice to meet you Julia. I'll see you tonight," He says to me and starts to leave, but stops to turn back and say "Oh and here's your notebook, but I might need to borrow it again." He hands me my notebook and gives me another smile before leaving me in the class room alone. 'Maybe I had him all wrong?'
I leave the room finally and meet my friends in the hall, I decide to go to Nancy's to get ready for tonight. My sister and I go home so I can get my costume and some makeup. While I'm getting my things I decide its best to leave my car, no use driving tonight if I decide to drink. I pack an overnight bag so I can stay with Nancy, I can just ride with her and Steve in the morning. When I'm about to leave the house, Amelia runs out with a bag of her own, "Can you drop me off?" She asks after throwing her bag into the car. She's already in the car and eagerly waiting for my response, I give her a shrug. "I'm not driving tonight," I say nonchalantly. She squeels, "then you won't mind if I borrow the car?" I look at my sister suspiciously. "I'll be safe I promise, plus if you stay with Nancy, how am I getting to school tomorrow?" She asks innocently, even throwing in her best puppy dog eyes for an added effect. I let out a breath, "fine, but you're dropping me off at Nancy's and saving me the walk." She grins and quickly switches over to the driver's seat, "but if this car isn't in one piece after tonight, I swear-" I start to lecture, "I know I know, you'll kill me and bring me back so I can pay to have it fixed, its gonna be fine!" She says as she starts the car and pulls out of the driveway. I smile at her, at least this will give her some practice before I leave for college.
