A Morning Thing?

The sun shines through the window and wakes me up. I roll over and realize I am not in my own room. After a moment of confusion, I remember that I'm with Billy. No I'm not with Billy. I am at Billy's house. Yes. I am at his house, in his room and until a minute ago I was sleeping...in Billy's bed.

Alright Julia, get it together. I snap myself out of it and look over, Billy is still asleep on the floor. I look at his face and he just seems so... peaceful. How does someone look that good in their sleep? His eyes open and look right into mine, he blinks a few times and then he looks like he's realized something. "Julia?" he says in a low grumbled tone paired a confused look, "are you watching me sleep?" My eyes widen in shock and I sit straight up, "Uh, no I just woke up and and when I rolled over you were right there and I was just looking at-" I frantically explan as he cuts me off, "looking at... me?" He sits up with an almost proud, but still sleepy, smile as he grabs a pack of cigarettes off the nightstand. I let out a deafeted sigh, "well, yes. BUT I wasn't watching you." I say shyly. He nods and shows a coy smile, "alright, give me a minute and we can go." He says, smoking his cigarette, still sitting on the floor. I look at him and wonder, "Well why can't we just go now?" He turns to look at me and then away, "Its a morning thing" he says casually. "What like you can't go until you finish your 'good morning' cigarette?" I ask mockingly. He pulls his cigarette away from his lips and looks at me before glancing down, and saying "No, but we can go with that." I'm confused and until I notice the blanket in his lap and how its raised a little. Well.. not really a little. I let out a light gasp and look down at my feet, and he repositions himself to where its not as noticeable. I'm embarassed but I can't help but think, 'well... good for Billy.'

Once Billy was able to get up, I helped him fold the blankets and then crept out of his room. We got into the car and he started to drive me home. "Thanks for last night, really." I said to him while we drove up the street. He shrugged, "Don't worry about it," then looked over to me, "Does this mean you're done not liking me?" I smiled at his question, "Yes. You really helped me out. Your name is officially cleared." He grinned which only made me smile more. We got to my house and I noticed my car was still missing from the driveway. "Shoot, my sister borrowed my car. She didn't come home so she's probably driving to school this morning," I say as I sink into the seat. Billy looks at the empty space in the driveway and then to me, "I can take you." My eyes widen, he's already done so much. "Are you sure it isn't any trouble? I could walk." I tell him. He shakes his head and smiles, "it's not a problem really. I have to go home but I can swing by on the way. When can you be ready?" He asks. I smile at him, "I won't be long, just, please don't honk when you're here. My dad's probably still asleep." I tell him, getting out of the car. He waited until I got to the front door to make sure I could get in. The door was unlocked so I turned and waved to him and he smiled and drove off. When I walked inside, my dad was of course asleep on the couch, so he probably didn't even notice I wasn't home.

I get out of the shower and got changed for school, since I'm not sure when Billy will get here I don't bother trying to do anything to my hair other than brushing it. I quickly get dressed and throw on some light makeup. I'm applying my mascara when I hear the rumble of his engine approaching. I grab my bag and race for the door. I see him lean over in his seat and pop open the passenger door for me. When I get in I see his sister sitting in the back, "Hello," I say to her. She looks me over and then turns her attention back to the window, "hey," she mumbles absently. I look back towards Billy, he glances at her through the rear view mirror and rolls his eyes. "Good morning," he says to me and I smile back to him as we pull off headed for school.

When we get to school, Max quickly hops on her skateboard and zips towards the middle school. Billy and I start to walk into school. "Thanks for the ride, I've got to run in and find Nancy. I'll see you later!" I chirp to Billy as I quickly head over to my locker. I look around but I don't see Nancy. Maybe she isn't feeling well after last night? I look around once more, I guess she isn't coming today. I head over to my locker and see Billy down the hall. I smile and wave, he smiles back at me but his expression suddenly changes to a blank one and he walks away. Why did he do that? "Hey sorry about last night." I turn and see Steve. He has an apologetic look on his face. He did leave us at the party pretty quickly, but he seemed really upset. "Yeah its okay, but what happened?" Steve looks down and just before he can say anything the bell rings. "I'll tell you later," Steve says and we both head off to class.

When class lets out I go to meet Steve. "Alright, so what's going on?" Steve tells me what happened with Nancy in the bathroom, "I know she was drinking but she still said that," he says. I see Billy again in the hall but when he looks at us, he seems annoyed. Maybe he's having a bad day? He looks at us a little longer and storms off. I wonder what his problem is. "Sorry you guys had to walk home. I'm such a dick, I shouldn't have done that." Steve apologizes again. "Well we didn't walk actually." I tell him, "Billy gave me a ride home." Steve looks confused and asked, "That guy gave you and Nancy a ride?" I shook my head and explained, "no he gave me a ride after Nancy left with Jonathan. She really needed to get home and she seemed like she wanted to be alone, so- " "Yeah I get it, got it, whatever." Steve looked annoyed, "I gotta go," he said before leaving me in the hall. Um okay is it something in the water or is everyone in a bad mood for some reason.

By the time English class rolled around, I realized I was actually happy to see Billy. I had him all wrong when we met, he's actually a pretty nice guy. When I sat down for class I waited for him to get my attention or whisper something to me, but he didn't. I turned around and handed him my notebook, "here, you can borrow my notes again." I said with a smile. He looked at my notebook and took it, "cool. thanks." He said quietly. When the bell rang he left without another word. I watched him leave, confused. Did I miss something?
