What's Your Problem?

For the next few days, Billy was pretty cold towards me. When I saw him in the hallway, he didn't wave. In class, he didn't talk to me. He's even taken other girls home now. He just seemed to be in a bad mood when he saw me. I can't really talk to Nancy about it because she and Steve had a fight. She even skipped school today, with Jonathan, which has Steve kind of upset. Steve and I walk awkwardly through the hall, I know he probably wants to ask about Nancy, but that would make it weird. But I can't really ask him how he's doing because he's been stand offish about the whole thing. The bell rings and we head to class.

I take my seat in Mr. Mathews class, and all I can really think about is why Billy isn't talking to me. Does he feel weird after I stayed over? He's the one who brought me there so why is he the one being weird about it. Does he think I'm a prude? If he does that makes him a jerk, I mean why would I do anything with him after barely knowing him? Maybe I-

"Does anyone have any questions about the assignment?" I hear Mr. Mathews say. I look around, what just happened. He lets out a sigh. "Miss Ryder, if you're done day dreaming, please pay attention." I nod my head, "Yes, Mr. Mathews. Sorry Mr. Mathews" I say awkwardly. He turns his attention back to the rest of the class and continues, "for your assignment, you'll be paired up so that your peer may review your paper. You will help your partner edit their rough drafts, and grade them on a scale of 1-5 on your review." I'm busy taking notes while the pairs are assigned, "- Billy and Julia, Matthew and Tabitha..." the teacher lists on. I jolt upright in my seat, 'Billy and Julia?' I turn around and Billy glances at me. I turn back in my seat. Okay, no problem.

After class Billy heads right out of the class room, but I catch up to him at his car. "Billy!" I shout as I finally walk up to him. He turns around to look at me, with the same annoyed look on his face, "What's up?" he says, clearly agitated. I let out a huff and remind him, "We have an assignment? We have to work on it together." when he doesn't say anything I ask, "when are you free?" he looks at me in silence a little longer and says, "fine lets get it over with." He opens his car door, "where are we doing this?" he asks. "Um your house?" I ask, but he just looks back and says "my house is no good, somewhere else." I think for a minute. Amelia already said she'd be out with friends, and my dad is working tonight. At least we'd actually get our assignment done without any distractions. "We can go to my house, but I don't know when my sister is coming home," I say. He nods and says, "I'll meet you there." Then drives off.

I get home pretty soon after talking to Billy. He didn't say when he'd meet me so I can clean while I wait on him. No sense working in the den with Dad's bottles and tv dinner trash all over the place.

When I'm finished cleaning, Billy still hasn't shown up and its already almost 6:30. I'm half way through my first draft on my homework when I hear the sound of Billy's car. The engine stops and a few seconds later I hear a knock. I get up and let Billy in, "Don't worry I didn't wait long," I say to him sarcastically. "Oh I'm sure you were busy," He replies gruffly. What does that mean? He looks around the house for a second before settling down on the couch.

We work in silence for a while, working on our assignment. I start tapping my pencil in annoyance. 'Why hasn't he said anything?' I wonder to myself. He's been acting weird ever since that morning and I haven't got a clue why. The silence is almost deafening until I finally decide to ask, "So what's your problem?" he scoffs, "my problem? Why do I have a problem?" I start to list off his weird behavior, "you've been weird since we hung out. You avoid me at school. You've been giving Steve a hard time too actually and I-" "Yeah I bet you're real worried about Harrington," he says coldly. I stop and tilt my head, "I don't know what that means, but I mean since he and Nance split-" I say before he cuts me off again, "I've seen you two, I get it. He's moving on with her best friend, real class," his words dripping with jealousy. I look at him in shock for a few second before laughing at what Billy said. He jumps back a little and asks, "What's so funny? Why are you laughing at me?" I giggle before saying "You, Billy Hargrove are JEALOUS" I laugh a little more. He lets out a huff  and crosses his arms before protesting, "no. No I am not jealous." I smile and poke him on the cheek, "yes you areee." Billy swats my hand away. I sit up and look directly at him, "Billy. I am not, and have never been involved with Steve," I say.

Without looking up from his paper he quietly asks, "You aren't?" I quickly reply to him, "No I am not." He gives me a confused look and asks, "then why'd you run off to see him the other day. You two are always together."  I sigh and explain to him, "He and Nancy are going through a fight, we're all friends. They're going to be fine. Also Steve just isn't my type." Billy sits quietly for a second, probably realizing how dumb he was for assuming something was going on instead of just asking about it. Eventually he sheds his tense attitude and for the first time in days I see the real Billy.

We spend the next few hours talking and joking with eachother while we work until my stomach lets out a loud gumbling noise. BIlly lets out a laugh and says, "let's get something to eat, we can finish up later." He grabs his keys and I tell him, "We're not in California, there aren't a lot of places open right now." Billy looks around and then shrugs, "well, what do you wanna do about food?" I smile and walk into the kitchen, "You like mac and cheese?"

While we ate, we watched the new Gremlins movie. This almost feels like a date. I set my bowl down on the coffee table and leaned back on the couch. Billy does the same but when he sits back he throws his arm up and around me. I freeze for a second, is this a date? Does Billy like me? My thoughts get cut off when Billy says, "I can move back if you're uncomfortable." He must've felt my body stiffen up. "No no. I'm good, I like this." I say before leaning into his shoulder, and I really did. This felt nice, cuddled up next to eachother. I noticed the time and turned to Billy to ask, "When did you need to head home?" Billy looked up and thought for a second, "Well, what time are your parents getting home? I can leave just before then. Unless you kick me out before that." He smiles down at me. "Well my dad has another night shift so he won't be home for a while. My sister is out with her friends, but she might come in through the window so Dad doesn't notice she was gone." I ramble on and he asks, "And your mom?" I stop. "She left two years ago... so no its just us." I say quietly. Billy looks at me for a while before he finally breaks the silence. "You don't have to talk about it, but I get it. My mom's gone too." I look up at him when he tells me. I study his face, he looks calm but I can almost see in his eyes, it hurts to think about it. So I don't ask, but I can tell. "Thank you for telling me," I whisper. Billy is still looking at me until I feel his hand move to my cheek and he pulls me in closer.

My heart is beating out of my chest and I close my eyes. When our lips touch, I feel my whole body start to tingle. He gently pulls me in and I sink into the kiss even more. I run my fingers through his hair and just before he starts to lean us back onto the couch the front door swings open.

"What the fuck?"
