Cheng Huan felt her heart tightened when she heard the crying sound. All sorts of scenarios that she had imagined came into her mind, and she got more and more worried.
"What's the matter, sweetheart? Were you bullied?"
As she was talking, she had already dried her hands on a towel and was about to grab her keys and head out.
She had it all figured out already. If XingXing was really bullied at school, she'd just bring him back. She could always look for a different kindergarten for him.
The little kiddo cried for a little bit before he gasped and said softly, "I.... I miss you so much!"
Then, he cried even louder.
XingXing was intimidated when he was placed suddenly in a brand-new environment. Then, he met lots of kids his age that he could play with and felt that the kindergarten wasn't that bad after all. When lunch time came and eating the not-so-good cooking, he felt sad all over again.
Why did Mommy send him there? And didn't even come to check on him? She must not love him anymore!
The more he thought about it, the sadder the little kiddo got. He inadvertently clanked his watch on the table during lunch and remembered that his mother had told him that he could reach her that way, so he thought he'd give it a try.
And he could hear his mother's voice through it!
XingXing had so much to complain about, so he started talking after just a little bit of crying.
He asked if his mother didn't like him anymore. He told her that the meals at the kindergarten weren't as good as his mom's cooking. And, he mentioned how much he missed her. He then abruptly switched over to telling her how many new friends he had made and that he was taught a song by a teacher at the kindergarten.
"Mom, let me sing it for you."
"Okay." Cheng Huan felt much better knowing that none of the scenarios in her mind had taken place. She let go of the door knob and went back to sitting on the couch with her legs crossed. Smiling, she said to him, "I have never heard XingXing sing before."
XingXing started immediately on the other end, "One, two, three, four, five. Going to hunt tigers in the mountains. We didn't get any tigers, we got... we got..."
The kindergarten teacher only taught them a kid's song to placate the kids and only taught the song a couple of times. XingXing only remembered the tunes and forgot most of the lyrics toward the end of the song. He was only able to sing a couple of lines before he started to stutter. Finally, with a pout, he said in a teary voice, "Mom, I forgot the rest."
He sounded so sad that Cheng Huan just wanted to laugh. She faked coughing before she started to comfort him, "It's alright. It's alright. XingXing is doing a great job already for remembering so much of the song. Mommy can't remember any of it."
Praise from a parent is good for establishing confidence in a child. Sure enough, XingXing was happy all over again almost immediately. He lifted his little face and said, "I will know it by tonight, Mommy."
"Okay, then XingXing can sing it for me when he gets home tonight."
The two yakked for a little bit longer and only after XingXing was reassured that his mother would come and pick him up that night that he went docilely with his teacher to take a nap.
Cheng Huan let out a sigh after she hung up the phone. She shook her head, chuckled, and went back to her work.
The kindergarten let out at 5 PM. Cheng Huan left half an hour early. By the time she got there, there were already plenty of parents waiting outside. It was the first time most of them had sent their kids to school and naturally they were a little worried.
