Between The Trees

I sit up, groggy, trying to rub the sleep from my eyes. The day feels like a blur. It takes a minute before I can actually open my eyes, but when I do, the first thing I notice is the sunset streaming through my window. The orange and pink hues are beautiful, but the clock on my dresser catches my attention.

7:15.

I woke up just in time to get Dustin and Mike from DnD. Guess school really wiped me out today. I drag myself out of bed, heading to the bathroom to splash some water on my face. My hair's a mess, so I quickly throw it up into a loose ponytail, then slide into my shoes, grabbing my keys off the counter before heading out the door.

Once I'm in the car, I pull into the school parking lot and sit there for a while, staring at the clock. It's already 7:30, but the boys are usually never out of the auditorium until about 7:40, so I wait a bit longer before deciding to go in and get them. I don't feel like sitting around any longer than I have to.

I make my way to the auditorium, where most of the after-school clubs and activities are held. As I walk in, I spot someone cleaning up—probably wrapping up after whatever club was held. As I get closer, I see it's the guy from lunch.

"Hey, are Mike and Dustin still here?" I ask.

He looks up at me, surprised to see me. "They were just here a few minutes ago," he says, shutting what looks like the last box of supplies. "You just missed them."

I sigh, feeling a little defeated. "They're probably already at the car," I mutter. "Thanks...?" I trail off, unsure of what else to say.

The guy, who looks like he's figuring me out, smiles and sticks his hand out. "Eddie. Eddie Munson."

"Y/N," I reply, shaking his hand. "As you probably already know, I'm Dustin's sister."

He raises an eyebrow. "Yeah, actually just found that out today."

"Really?" I laugh, feeling a little smug. "I thought he'd be raving about how great a sister I am."

Eddie chuckles. "I think he's too busy with...other things."

"Well, they're probably waiting for me," I say, shifting my weight. "Have a good night, Eddie."

"Later, Y/N," he replies with a grin, and I walk back out of the building.

Just as I expected, Dustin and Mike are leaning against the car, clearly not in a hurry to go anywhere. Dustin looks up as I approach.

"Where were you?" he asks, half-exasperated, half-relieved.

"I went to look for you guys," I answer, buckling my seatbelt. We start pulling out of the parking lot, and Dustin points to the Burger Shack up ahead.

"Alright, are you guys hungry?" I ask, glancing at both of them.

They both practically shout, "Yes!" in unison, and I roll my eyes, making a sharp turn into the drive-thru.

As I order, they begin talking about how hungry they are, making me feel a little more justified for picking up dinner on the way home. After grabbing our food, we head home. We eat in silence for a bit before I break the silence.

"I know it's kind of my job since I'm your older sister, but you guys owe me," I say, giving them a pointed look.

Dustin and Mike both nod, their mouths full of food. I laugh at the sight.

"Good night, guys," I say, giving them each a pat on the back before heading to my room to crash for the night.

The next morning, I get up earlier than usual. The sun's barely peeking through the trees when I finish my breakfast. I decide to take the opportunity to get some chores done. While I'm cleaning, I notice Dustin and Mike passed out on the living room floor, tangled in blankets. They were definitely up all night.
