It was Hope's first day back since her suspension. As soon as she walked into her Defensive Magic class, she felt everyone's eyes on her, especially Penelope's.
By then, everyone had heard about her incident with Penelope. It's not every day that someone casts a fire spell on another student.
"It's so good to see you again," Josie came up to her with a huge smile and hugged her.
"I've only been gone a week," Hope sat in her usual seat next to Josie.
"Only a week? It felt like forever!"
"We texted and called, but if you missed me so much, then why didn't you come visit me again?"
"No magic outside of class," she responded. "I risked getting caught enough the first time."
"Such a headmaster's daughter," Hope shook her head.
"Hey! This relationship takes two people," Josie pointed out. "You're a witch, why couldn't you do it? What's your excuse?"
"You got me there," Hope shrugged playfully.
"Settle down class," the teacher got everyone's attention. "I'm going to be taking attendance. Say 'here' when I get to your name."
"Alyssa Chang," the teacher started to rattle off students' names.
Josie turned back to Hope and shifted the conversation. "But in all seriousness, how did things go with your parents?"
"It's honestly been really weird having my dad around the house again. Sometimes he and my mom fight, but they were both in the same place as me, which hasn't happened since I was a kid."
"I get that," Josie nodded her head. "If my parents suddenly started living together again I'd be weirded out too."
"Hope Mikaelson," the teacher called out.
"Here," Hope responded.
A couple students gave her strange looks, but most were too busy talking with their friends to notice.
"Mikaelson?" Josie raised a brow.
"Yeah, I don't want to hide who I am anymore," Hope told her proudly.
"Good," Josie smiled. "You're perfect just the way you are."
"Elizabeth Saltzman."
"Here," she responded while giving a knowing look to her sister.
"Josette Saltzman."
"Here."
The teacher finished the last of the names and told everyone to quiet down.
After a dreadfully boring hour lecture, the bell rang. Hope and Josie exited the classroom holding hands, but were stopped by Penelope outside of the door.
"I need a word with Jo," Penelope was signaling for Hope to go away.
Josie gave Hope an 'it's okay' look. Hope obliged and walked about 15 feet down the hallway, but kept a careful watch on the two.
"What do you want Penelope?" Josie asked.
"I wanna know what's up with you and Hope," she answered forwardly. "Word on the street is that you two are a thing."
"What are you talking about?" Josie looked around getting flustered. "Hope and I are best friends."
"So you don't like Hope like that? And Hope isn't into you like that?" Penelope brushed back a piece of Josie's hair.
Josie momentarily looked over at Hope who was still watching the interaction intently. Her eyes had flashed gold for a brief second. Her brows were furrowed and her hands were balled into tight fists.
"No, just friends," Josie finally repeated.
"So, how about you and I hang out sometime?"
"No, this conversation was enough to tide me over for a long while," Josie declined. "Face it, you and I are never getting back together."
