Thirteen.
“You sick bastard!” I growled, charging toward Cameron, who did nothing to defend himself. The rogue werewolf only stood, a small smirk on his face and a faraway look in his eyes. Before I could lay a finger on him, an arm shot out, snaked around my waist and pulled me back, safe within the border. I struggled futilely, hoping to escape but only resulted in Ryan's arm tightening. Sensing my anger and disgust, he clasped his other arm onto the first one, creating a stronger, tighter hold. Relinquishing, I slumped against him, defeated, but I didn't lose my glare or my irritation. “Let me go.”
“Will you do something stupid?” Ryan murmured in my ear, his breath tickling my lobe.
I swiveled around to direct my glare at my 'mate' and muttered a stiff, “No.”
He reluctantly released me, but kept a close proximity to me. “Leave. Now.” Those words were directed at his brother.
Cameron paid no attention to his twin; his gaze penetrated me, searing me with their intensity. “Do you want me to leave, Little Jamie?” He asked, sickly sweet.
“Don't call me that!” I snapped, taking a step forward. Jenna murmured a low warning.
“Am I hitting a nerve?” He taunted.
I clenched my fist, thinking that I can easily cross over, punch him in the face, and race back within the comfort of the border without getting caught but I knew that it won't be that easy. Werewolves', I was starting to realized, most lethal weapon was their speed. Even with my years of cheerleading practices wasn't going to do much good against the speed of a lycanthrope. Ryan, so attuned to my emotions, placed a hand on my shoulder. Remembering the secret he hid from me, I shook it off, saddened that he didn't trust me enough to tell me the truth. But, the fact that I was his mate thrilled me. Strange as it seemed, it gave me a sense of belonging and security.
Doesn't matter, I concluded bitterly, pushing back the sentimental part of me. He lied to me. Mates be damned.
“Shunned by his own mate.” Cameron chuckled; the sound filled with satisfaction and accomplishment, as if his life goal to to terrorize his own flesh and blood. Though, coming from someone like him, goals like that wasn't all that surprising. “How funny.”
“Only a psychopath would find pain funny.” I snarled, shocked by my own boldness.
“So, I'm a psychopath. It's not like I haven't heard that one before.” Cameron shook his head, taking a step closer to the border. All four werewolves on our side simultaneously mirrored his movement. A grin slid onto the rogue werewolf's face, darkening his features.
“You're insane.” I declared.
“Heard that one too.” He crossed his arms, and leaned casually against the nearest tree trunk. “You know, I grow fond our witty banter.”
“Get the hell away from me, our pack and my mate, you bastard before I come and hunt you myself!” It was a hollow threat but Cameron's eyes flashed angrily. Behind him, I heard multiple snickers and a humor-filled command from Ryan to quiet down. When I turned, Ryan was staring right at me, pride swelling in his eyes. Suddenly, seeing that look, the sadness and anger of Ryan's betrayal of sort dissipated, replaced with happiness and strength. Knowing Ryan, I knew he had a good reason for not telling me the truth. And meeting his crazed brother, I knew his reasons.
My mate, I mused, smiling a content smile, Does have a nice ring to it.
“How can you have accepted it so quickly?” Cameron demanded in disbelief. “Lila didn't! She ran from me at first.”
