Seventeen.
He knows, the phrase swirled around my mind like an incantation, teasing, taunting. My brother's knowledge brought forth a round of question, confusion, and most importantly, fear. Would Cameron target him next? Andy was the most important family member I had after my mother. To lure me out, all Cameron had to do was get to my brother and he'd get to me.
Ryan's swift punch to Andy's jaw jarred me out of my reverie and I hurried forward, hurtling myself protectively in front of my brother. “Stop!”
Fortunately, Ryan straightened from his tense posture but the menacing light was still burning in his jade green depths. Andy jerked me behind him and growled lowly, “Get out of our house!”
I placed my hand on his shoulder. “No, wait.”
“Jamie! He's crazy! Insane!” Andy shouted. “When Mom finds out, she'll never let you near him again.”
I groaned frustratingly. “You don't understand! I – we're...” I halted. I wasn't sure how to explain to him why we couldn't stay away from each other, why it was crucial I needed to be with him. Not unless I want to reveal another secret that wasn't mine to reveal.
“Sit down.” Ryan intercepted, pointing at the sofa. “I'll explain.” His voice was calm and full of tranquility. Seeing as the surprise approach wasn't successful, Ryan had apparently opted for the 'explain-in-a-calm-way' approach.
“No. Get out.” My brother spat. Andy was a bit...difficult when his core beliefs were shattered or challenged. To an outsider, Andy would seem obnoxious and rude but I saw what was inside of him, I knew how scared and angry he felt. I knew he felt angry at himself for letting something like this happen to me, even though he doesn't necessarily believe Ryan, he doesn't want Ryan's lies to entangle me. I knew he was scared because a small part of him was compelled to believe Ryan; Andy's seen enough in the world to know that something like this can happen and if it were true, he doesn't want me to get hurt. Call it rude or pompous or barbaric but really, it's protectiveness. In his mind, he's convinced that if Dad was still here, he wouldn't let this happen. After all these years, he was still beaten up about our father's death. And because of that, I couldn't really blame him for reacting like he did.
“Andy, please. Listen to him.” I begged. My voice cracked and my chin quivered at the thought of losing Ryan and putting my brother in danger.
Andy glared down at me. I almost flinched at the intensity of his gaze but I held his eyes. Finally, he sighed and moved to the sofa, sitting down stiffly. I gave Ryan a small nod, hoping he'd let the news break gently. I sat down next to Ryan and his hand latched onto mine, as if he was the one needing moral support.
“I'm a werewolf.” Ryan announced.
I winced. Way to break the ice.
I saw Andy's eye twitched dangerously. I gave Ryan's hand a slight squeeze.
“I don't believe you.”
Ryan narrowed his eyes and his tone suddenly turned sly. “You want proof?”
I gasped when I realized what he was thinking. My grip on his hand tightened and he glanced back at me. Don't, I mouthed.
I have to, otherwise, he'll never believe me.
My breathing hitched when his words swam into my mind. It wasn't like last time when I infer what he was saying. No, this was completely different. I could actually hear him as if he was speaking to me. But, in my mind.
But – what? How? I sputtered.
An amused twinkle shone in his eyes as he replied, I'll explain later. I have to show him.
