Fifteen.
When the bell rang for dismissal, I searched for Ryan. I needed to understand why he was so miffed at Chris and so against me going to the dance. I knew the reasons but they're unjustified. If I was afraid at leaving the comfort of my home and the comfort of the Tylers' then I'd never be able to live my life. The idea of dying at the hands of Cameron was frightening but cowering in fear and living whatever was left of my life in solitary wouldn't help; in fact, it was exactly what he'd expected.
Besides, in all my years of school, I had never been to a dance. Whenever one arose, there were always obstacles in the way. When I die, I wanted to at least cross out 'go to dance/prom' off my bucket list. Of course, explaining that reasoning to the Tylers' was a mute point. They were so focused on keeping me safe that they refused to acknowledged the fact that I might not die. Whenever the subject was broached, there was always one if.If I dies. If Cameron fulfills his promise. If Lila's fate might be mine. There was never an absolute starter; never when, always if.
Fighting through the throng of overeager students rushing to escape the brooding four-walled building, my eyes roamed for dark, mussed hair and jade green eyes. I was jostled from behind and a gasp left my lips as I stumbled forward.
“Careful.”
Arms steadied me and I glanced up. Instead of smiling at the sight of him, my lips curled into a grimace. “We need to talk.”
Ryan kept his face neutral as we exited the school, the commotion around us was deafening. “Whatever about?”
I shifted my bag up higher on my shoulder and glowered at him. “Don't play dumb with me. You totally ditched Gym!”
“I really don't know what you're talking about.” He answered. When he finally gazed at me, I saw earnest confusion in his eyes. He really had no idea what I was ranting about. Sighing, I shook my head. “No, really. I want to know what's got you so riled up.”
“It's nothing.” I mumbled.
“Jamie.” Ryan chided warningly. He grabbed my upper arm and pulled me to a stop. The students swerved around us, occasionally glancing over with interest.
I exhaled loudly. “I want to go to the dance.”
“No.” The refusal was simple enough. To everyone else who couldn't detect and interpret his tone, it would sound like he's stating a statement. To me, it was a command. My skin crawled and I knew he inputted his Alpha power into that one little word.
My irritation skyrocketed. “Why not?”
“Because it's not safe.” He answered. “You know that. What if he shows up at the dance? Would you really risk your safety and all those people that are there?”
I froze and my blood ran cold. Unfortunately, he was right. If I went and Cameron showed up at the dance, I would not only endanger my life but the lives of my classmates. There it was again. If. But, could I really do that? Could I risk their lives just for my own selfish, petty needs? “It would be my first dance.” I muttered lowly. It was vain of me to even consider attending but the teenage part of me wouldn't pass up the opportunity.
That shocked Ryan. “Really?” His lips tugged at the corners and I knew he was fighting a smile.
I growled in irritation, though it was a meek attempt next to his wolf snarl, and stomped off. I clenched my hands and dug my keys from my pocket. I unlocked my car and slid in, starting the ignition. Annoyed, I punched on the radio and a metal song blasted through the speakers. Wincing at its volume, I turned the knob down considerably.
