Three

My mom slid the grocery list over to me and said, "I need you to pick up a few things." And resumed her usual routine of organizing the spices alphabetically, something that's kept her busy amongst other things.

I jammed the folded square of paper into my back pocket and caught Andy staring at me, as if trying to notice something new. "What?" I stood, grabbed the car keys, extract a few twenties from Mom's purse and headed for the door. Now that I knew where Wal-Mart was, I no longer need Ryan and his deathtrap he called a car.

"Where were you last night?" He followed me out, walking side-by-side down the driveway.

I raised an eyebrow. "Are you coming with me or what?"

"Hm, yeah." He said absently then repeated his question. "Where were you?"

"At a friend's house." I answered, choosing what I say very carefully and deciding to keep Ryan's gathering as vague as possible. Why? Because I'm pretty sure my older brother would freak if he knew I was hanging around juniors and seniors while I'm only a freshman. Yup, sucks as it is, I'm just now starting my high school year. And in a new city, no less. And I wouldn't want that little bedroom scene to be exposed. Beside, if Andy ever found out those things, I've no doubt that he would go over there and knock Ryan senseless for quote, unquote, 'using his little sister for his petty needs.' Though I don't understand what any of those words coincide with me, it would be offensive and rather embarrassing.

"We've just got here and you're already going to stranger's houses?" He demanded, gripping my elbow and pulling me to a stop also.

"Hey. Let go." I yanked my arm away from his hold and scowled. "What is your problem? Mom knows them! They're coming over for dinner tonight."

He ran a hand through his uncombed hair, trying to tame his wild locks. "Sorry, I overreacted."

"What is wrong with you?" I asked softly.

"The stupid movers forgot to deliver my posters." He said, looking down at the ground.

I stifled a laugh. "That's what got you so upset? Posters?"

He gave me a dirty look and I straightened my face, hopping into the driver's seat and jammed the keys into the ignition. "They're special." He objected.

I snorted and drove out onto the intersection. "Yeah, sure. If you can say a poster of Megan Fox in a skimpy bikini is special then yeah."

"She's hot." He said dreamily.

"And way out of your league." I shot back. "Besides you can always get new ones. Wait, scratch that, don't. I really don't want to look at her boobies and legs every time I go into your bedroom." I shuddered, remembering the time when I walked into without asking and he was kissing the poster in a very provocation position. That was how we established the rule of knock first before entering in our house.

He grinned. "Just because it annoys you, I'm gonna get two."

"Oh dear Lord." I groaned, veering the last turn before parking into an available parking space.

"Tell me, how did you know how to get here last time?" He asked, pushing a cart and began making his way to the Meat section.

"I got directions from one of our neighbors." I lied smoothly. Well, it's not all lies. I did get directions from our neighbors just in a different way. I wasn't going to tell him about my outing the other night and I won't tell him about my little road trip with Ryan.

"Oh." He shrugged and began inspecting the steaks with care.

I ventured away from him and began choosing a few bell peppers and some lettuce and tomatoes. Tonight, we'd be having steaks, salad and side dish of mash potatoes and a chocolate cake for dessert. After I retrieved what was on the list, I wandered back to the Meat section where Andy was still holding up two steaks, poking and prodding the meat. I put the other ingredients in the cart and stared at him oddly. "Would you just pick one?"
