Thank you for the love and comments, hope you enjoy this chapter Cadimus makes a very important decision...

"Leave us," Balthazar ordered.

Cadimus was happy for the order. He did not want to see what was to come.

At least with his uncle Airne would be safe from Gimma's unwanted touch.

Somehow that did not seem like enough of a consolation to Cadimus.

She hadn't allowed him to be tortured...

And here you are walking away.

She's a phoenix, if she were a dragon she wouldn't have even been on the battlefield.

Had she put herself in danger by choosing to fight, or was her brother to blame for letting her fight and letting his sister risk harm?

Cadimus left the room with the other guests watching at Tyler screamed and cursed them as they dragged him away from the library and down to the dungeon.

She did not scream like a woman.

When the first cry broke through to Cadimus' ears he could hear how she fought against making sound, swallowing half of her own scream between clenched teeth.

Goosebumps broke out all across Cadimus' skin at the sound.

He stood frozen for a moment physically unable to move, his hand on the doorknob.

Are you going to let him torture her?

Are you going to just stand there....

What can you do?

A second strangled sound followed and a shudder passed through Cadimus.

Stepping away from the door he pulled himself from the temptation to just open the door and walk right back in and tell his uncle to fuck off, whatever good that would do.

Balthazar was insane which made his power all the more dangerous. In a fair fight or duel Cadimus might have had the power to defeat him, but there were things that Balthazar was willing to do, darkness he was willing to embrace that Cadimus would not dare.

A growl came through the door, primal and raging in pain, as if she were daring his uncle rather than giving in. It was followed by a pained squeal that could not be held back.

He tried to tune it out. Tried to block it, like he had blocked out much in his life. It had gotten easier with time to ignore the things he did not agree with or wish to see.

He had heard a thousand screams in his life.

Why did the sound of her strangled cries make his skin crawl?

A real scream followed.

I'll kill him, the thought slammed through Cadimus and his feet turned back towards the door.

His body locked, fighting.

Walking in would do more harm than good for both of them. There was no point, he should just...ignore it.

Its just the sound, that pitch would make anyone's skin crawl, he told himself.

You know that isn't true.

Nurunia appeared next to him, shattering the glass cage in Cadimus' mind winch held him frozen.

She looked so calm and serene. He wished he could feel something like that right now instead of feeling like he was on the edge of a cliff looking out over the edge.
