meanwhile in California
Max felt numb, like she was frozen time. She was lying face down encapsulated by her bed. staring blankly into the abyss. Time felt like a made up construct and all max could manage to think about was her. Her with the deep brown eyes, her with the brunet locks, her with the brightest and the only one max wanted.
How could she be so stupid to send her away to push her out of her life. To never tell her how she felt to keep all her doors closed and to never let her in, to treat her like everyone else when she wasn't like everyone else she was special. She was the most important, most beautiful and the only person max ever wanted. Max laid there not even knowing how to comprehend what she had done, not knowing how to live without her, without her smile, without her soulful eyes. She couldn't, she couldn't live without her.
Even though max knew she had to push el away it didn't hurt any less or make it any easier. All she could see when she closed her eyes was els glossy eyes shiny in the dim lit living room as max turned and walked away. And even though max knew it wasn't fair to keep el in California its didn't make her want to desperately bring her back any less.
'Knock knock'
"max honey, its dad, i urr just wanted to let you know im back," sam said to max through the closed door.
"Alright," max mumbled back trying her nest to conceal her sadness.
"Do you um wanna maybe come help at the bar? you know its always at its busiest on a Saturday," sam asked
"Yeah sure dad, ill be down in ten" max replied biting her tongue, she couldn't think of anything she wanted to do less then go and work around a bunch of drunk sweaty people, but maybe a distraction would be nice.
"Coolio thanks kid," sam replied heading downstairs.
Max didn't know what eleven had told him when he was driving her back to hawkins but from her knowledge he just though el had a family emergency and that's why she had to go home so urgently, and she wasn't planning on telling him anything, because even though max loved her dad he just isn't the emotions kind of guy so she wasn't fond of the idea of telling about her ongoing heartbreak, but she did know that casey knew, which was the precise reason she was avoiding her. But luckily she was out with laila till late anyways.
After a couple minutes she gathered herself, she brushed out her matted ginger locks and washed her face, she put on a black polo shirt and headed down to the bar,
"Hey, max," her dad yelled over to her from behind the bar, she walked over and dunked under the flap door as the hinge was jammy and hard to open, max could never do it when she was little.
"Hey dad, so what do you want me to do?" she asked wiping her hands on her shirt,
"Well i gave casey the night off to go out with laila so your on clean up duties please kid," he said filling a glass and handing to a guy on the other side of the bar.
"Yeah ok, ill go round and get the empty glasses first," max said smiling,
she grabbed a large black plastic tray and headed out round all the tables full of people, she politely picked up all the empty glasses gather in the middle of all the tables and carried them carefully back to the bar and dropped the in the empty sink, she filled the sink with hot bubbly water and started to scrub them when the phone mounted on the wall started ringing, the phone in the bar is connected to the home phone in the flat so that if there was an urgent call and sam was in the bar he wouldn't miss them.
Max saw the phone ringing and peeled off her washing up gloves and picked up the phone,
"Hello Mayfield's speaking," max said down the line
