It's been about a year since Oma has been living with her new parents, Toshiko and Isao Lei. They both treat her very well and wish her the most happiness. The village that they live in is called Zhoudao, and although it isn't the most prosperous, it still stands, and many people still live there.
See, Zhoudao is very close to the now empty northern air temple. Before all the airbenders were wiped out, the people of Zhoudao and the airbenders at the temple were very connected. After all of them were killed mercilessly, Zhoudao was devastated. Not only because they lost many of their friends, but also because the other villages labeled theirs as "cursed." Other villages and cities stopped many of their trading services, and cut ties with them. That's why a lot of our villagers moved to the northern air temple afterwards, to make a new life in memory of their friends and families. No one has seen them since they left though, we're not even sure if they're still around.
Zhoudao has only managed to stay on its feet because of the government giving them an adequate amount of money and some food every month. The villagers have no idea why they do this, but they accept none the less.
After having lived in Zhoudao for a year, Oma learned what it really meant to be hungry. Before, she just wanted to eat because she loved the tastes. She used to get three meals a day, on a regular time schedule. While in her new village, for a while she was given two meals each day, and her parents shared one meal. They believed that it was an essential that a child gets as much food as can fit in their stomach, because they need to grow as strong as they can.
Toshiko has been saying to Oma that the two of them, plus Isao and Iwa (Oma's squirrel-mouse), will go out of the village to buy something nice for her on the day before the anniversary of her getting adopted.
The anniversary is in a little over a month and Oma is awaiting it enthusiastically. She doesn't get to go out of the village every day, you know.
Right now, she's on the way to her father's shop. He sells all kinds of weapons at his shop. He and Toshiko make them together and then sell them. Isao is the one that stands behind the desk and stays in the store selling things while Toshiko is out buying metal from other villages or taking care of Oma.
Since Toshiko is scouting for a good metal to use for the set of axes they are planning on making next, Oma is going to hang out with Isao at the shop.
Oma walks in the store and runs up to Isao giving him a big hug. She's almost gotten used to ignoring the swords propped up on the walls and the grapples hanging from the ceiling.
"Hiya there Oma," he greets. "Any luck finding that pretty beetle you saw earlier?"
Oma huffed. "Nope. Not even Iwa was able to spot it!"
"Thats too bad. It had really pretty wings didn't it?"
"Uh-huh." Oma agreed kicking at the sandy ground, disappointed.
Isao picked up Oma from her armpits and rested her in his arms. "We can go looking for other bugs later if you want."
"Yeah!" Oma smiled brightly and grabbed at Isao's shirt, laughing.
"Want to see the axe design that me and mom made?"
Oma bit her bottom lip and nodded at least seven times. Isao chuckled and brought them over to the wooden desk with two wooden chairs placed in front of it. "Ooh, it's so pretty." Oma admired and jumped out of Isao's arms. She looked at it up closer and touched the stained paper.
"Thanks. I felt like one with ridges on the tip would cut more efficiently." Isao reasoned. "And I thought it looked a little fancier."
"I can't wait to see this once it's made." Oma said with sparkles in her eyes. "What kind of metal do you think Mama will bring back?"
"Hmm," Isao pretended to ponder. "She said she was looking for an unusual metal so it wouldn't be plain old carbon steel. I think the one she may be looking for is nickel. Not the most common, but not unheard of."
Oma was staring up at Isao with wonder in her eyes. "It always sounds so cool when you talk about weapons!"
"Aww, well aren't you the cutest?" He asked rhetorically. "You are going to be very knowledgeable when you grow up."
"Yay!" Oma exclaimed with the same bright smile as usual.
"Mom will be back around sunset, do you want to go out looking for seeds for Iwa? I can join you later."
"Sure!" Oma skipped out of the shop, being careful not to run herself through with a sharp object.
:::
Oma had only found a handful of seeds before she realized the sun was going down. Once she sat on the ground, she noticed just how tired she was. Her head started spinning and she laid down on the dirt.
"Ugh get up." Oma said, forcing herself to stumble back onto her feet. "Get back... home." She said to herself tiredly.
Just as she reached the door of her house, she saw Isao closing the front door. Oma found the little energy she had left to speed walk over to her father.
As he looked at her, he saw her tired eyes and smiled fondly. "I was about to go look for you."
Oma shoved her arms up in the air and Isao picked her up and carried her back inside. "Is Mama back yet?"
Isao carried her inside her room and placed her on her bed. "No, but she will be soon. You should go to bed though, it's getting late."
"But I want to wait for Mama." Oma whined hopping off her bed.
"You can see her in the morning, sleep is good for you."
"No!" She crossed her arms and huffed, glaring at Isao.
"But she might take a really long time to get back, and she would be upset if you stayed up so late." Isao tried to reason, but Oma continued pouting.
"I want to see Mama!" Oma demanded then started squealing and shrieking.
"No. It's time for bed!"
Oma screamed one final time and pounded the ground in frustration. Both Isao and Oma fell to the ground as the earth shook for a short second. Isao stood up and brushed the dust off of his pants.
When Oma stood up she saw two small craters in the ground right next to each other. They were right where she had hit the ground.
Oma was confused and stunned at her show of strength, but Isao seemed overjoyed. He grinned so much his face hurt and small dimples appeared on his face. Isao picked Oma up and lifted her into the air.
Before he was able to say anything, they heard the door open and shuffling footsteps coming towards the room.
Toshiko stepped into the doorway with a worried face. "What happened? I heard a noise from outside."
"Oma just earthbended!"
