Stones crunched under my new leather boots. The four of us just passed through a small trading village and stole some supplies that we would use for the next week as we traveled to the next town.
Saki explained to me while we were in the village that her, Yumi, and Su-ji, had been staying out of the Fire Nation's radar for a long time together before they met me. They usually spent from a week to a month out in the wilderness before stealing stuff from a new out-of-the-way town so that they can leave again.
We were heading out towards the ocean's shores and were trying to get there before mid-day so that we could make camp.
The sun was covered by the occasional cloud in the vast blue sky while we walked across a grassy field covered in brilliant flowers. I could tell that we were getting closer to the ocean because the wind grew stronger and blew through my long ponytail that hung over my shoulder.
If I looked in the distance I could see the grass start to fade out into rock and then ocean. As we trudged on, I could tell that we were all getting a little bit tired. I'm not used to carrying so much stuff on my back, but that's to be expected if we're spending over a week away from any people.
We were now only a couple hundred feet from the shore and I realized that we were heading towards a cliff above the ocean.
Su-ji stopped in front of us and turned around, taking off her backpack. The rest of us followed her lead and let our bodies take a moment to adjust to being free of all of that weight.
"Su-ji, why don't you go and scout while the three of us set up the tent?" Yumi suggested, starting to take out the tent that all four of us shared now, although it is cramped.
Nodding, Su-ji walked off after grabbing some knives from her pack. Yumi handed me some nails and Saki the hammer so that we could keep the tent in place while Yumi held it up for us.
After nailing down the tent itself, Yumi and I set up a fireplace and started roasting some cabbage and mushrooms. Saki had walked off towards the cliff to look down at the ocean leaving me alone with Yumi.
"So," I started, flipping the cabbage over with a twig. "Are you a bender, Yumi?" Her name still felt so new to me.
I felt Yumi's eyes on my face trying to read my intentions but I kept my sight on the food. "No," she answered. I nodded. "Are you?"
My heart froze up and my nerves doubled in speed. I remembered my power and I swallowed my memories, pushing them down into the deepest part of my mind. I will never use that power again. "No." My voice was deep and I hoped she wasn't able to see through me.
"This will probably be ready to eat soon. Just a few more minutes." She said, bringing my attention back to the food.
"Saki!"
Mine and Yumi's heads whipped around to see Su-ji, just returned from scouting, running towards the cliffside where Saki was nowhere to be seen.
Su-ji's long strides brought out just how long her legs were. Yumi and I watched as Su-ji ran, not slowing down for anything and jumping off without a second thought.
The two of us overcame our daze and started running too. My hair rushed behind me and the air beat and thrashed against my face in the most satisfying way I felt like I could run so fast I could fly up into the sky.
Only a few more strides away from the edge I felt a hand grab mine. We left the ground together, curling our legs up to our chests, we looked down to the ocean and saw Saki laughing and Su-ji smiling at her.
The mist of the ocean sprinkled my face before we hit the frigid water. I felt air bubbles run across my skin from the splash I made. Yumi let go of my hand while we were still underwater and I kicked my legs to reach the surface, reaching my hands up to help propel my body.
