The texture of the refined powder softly brushing over my cheeks was mesmerizing. I looked into Yumi's sharp yellow eyes that stared just below mine on my cheeks. She moved her thumb up from my cheek and onto the bridge of my nose, brushing over it lightly with pink powder.
Her darkened eyelids closed, revealing a thick red powder that she had applied before she did the rest of ours. Yumi reached down to her bag and brushed off the pale pink powder on her thumb, and applying a pale brown.
She reached her thumb to my lips. "Rest your lip muscles please." I did so. Her finger stroked across my bottom lip, pulling it with friction. Her fingers felt unfamiliar to my lips. "Purse your lips." I did so. She used her fingernail and scraped around my lips where the powder had gotten.
"Done," she said simply, tying her bag shut and standing up, leaving me sitting in the grass curious as to what I looked like.
Saki and Su-ji's makeup was already finished and they seemed much more used to this than I was. They told me that Yumi almost always did their makeup when going into more populated areas, so they could be a little less recognizable and stand out less. The makeup was a disguise, not something to look good in.
But they did look good. Yumi had made herself slightly pinker, Saki had gotten a olive green tint to her cheeks, and Su-ji's eyes had become more grey.
It didn't take too long to reach the town. The cobbled stone streets were very crowded and the four of us tried to stay on the less busy roads.
The heat radiated off of the road and when I looked closely I could see a distortion of light just above it. Sweat dripped down my forehead and I wiped it off before it could mess up my makeup.
My eyes blurred and I fell forward slightly; I must be feeling lightheaded. "Do you have the water?" I asked Yumi. She untied the water pouch from the left side of her belt and handed it to me."Thanks."
I took a few swigs of water while walking and then handed it back to Yumi. "Does anyone need to eat?" She asked, tying the water back.
"I could eat." Saki said. She sniffed the air and her eyes lit up. "Kebabs... mmm."
A light smile emerged on Yumi's face. "Okay, lets get some food, then find a place to sleep."
My eyebrows rose. "We're staying here tonight?"
"What else were you thinking?" She asked and continued walking towards the food stand.
"I guess I wasn't." I mumbled, following them. I smelled the savory waft of kebabs that Saki smelled and grinned. We all were a little hungry after only eating a piece of bread all day.
Yumi bought us all one kebab and we ate them while walking along the road. I took a piece of meat from my kebab and put it in my pocket, feeling Iwa lick it out of my hand.
We walked along the road, the sun lowering and giving us shade.
Finally, we found a small, run-down resort that seemed out of the way enough for us to stay in.
:::
The floor groaned when we walked into our room. There sat two double beds under the glittery dust particles that hung like a haze that we split as we walked through the room.
The beds each had two sheets, one on the mattress and the other to sleep under. They had small stains on the edges of the pillows and they smelled like home.
Saki and Su-ji drew towards the bed farthest to the door. I sat on the other one and looked at Yumi. She was standing by the window, opening it and closing it a few times to make it easier to leave after we wake up. Her grey hair rested on her shoulders and shifted ever so slightly when she moved.
I took off my jacket and pants and moved under the top sheet of the bed. I scooted against the wall and positioned my body so I would be able to see the whole room as I fell asleep.
A rustling came from the other side of the room and I saw Saki and Su-ji getting in bed. They seemed to be comfortable sleeping together, seeing as we have all been sharing a tent for a while. I was slightly nervous to be sleeping next to Yumi. I have a feeling that she isn't completely comfortable with me either.
The sunlight faded from the room and I noticed that the dust disappeared. Yumi eventually decided to go to bed and I tried to look asleep so that I wouldn't have to notice her.
My muscles finally loosened and my heart felt like a massive force dragging me into the bed. I let my eyelashes intermingle and my eyes rest.
A sudden shift in the bed brought my awareness back and the room was considerably darker than just a moment ago.
A light presence hovered behind my back and I realized that I was now facing the wall. A arm snaked over my hip and wrapped around my middle. Yumi must be asleep.
Her head rolled over into my neck and I felt her breath on my skin. Her hair mixed with mine and her knees curled into the backs of mine. She feels so vulnerable.
I twitched my finger to make sure I could move after sleeping. I rolled softly - trying not to wake her up - out of the bed.
My feet pressed into the splintering, wood floor. The window was the source of light at the moment, so I walked to it and leaned my elbows on the sil. The trees in the distance looked like sharp silhouettes, on alert for the sun who will give them love in just a few hours.
The moon was nowhere to be seen and there were small gaps in the clouds where the stars gleamed. I'm so far from where I was.
The swishing of sheets gave away Yumi's rousing. I let her approach me without acknowledging her.
Her soft skin slid against mine and she grabbed my hand. Her touch felt like a jot to my heart. Her other hand skimmed my chin and turned my head towards her. Even in this dim light I could see her blush.
I leaned in and my lips grazed hers. She pushed herself towards me and we kissed. We separated our lips and I walked back to bed, letting my thoughts consume me.
My face was red and all I could do was try and process what I just did. She got into bed too and we made sure not to be too close.
What was that?
