"Why are we seeing this guy?" you asked, glancing around the sleek waiting room.
A secretary behind a steel-gray, metal desk watched you for a moment with disinterest before the phone trilled, calling her attention. Plucking the handset out of its cradle, she pressed it to her ear and chirped, "This is Adam Solberg's office. How may I help you?"
Steven had let Marc take the lead on this one. Neither had come up with a suitable explanation for why you both were going to see Ra's avatar. Short of explaining the whole deal, which neither of them was keen on doing, seeing as neither had reason to believe you wouldn't run for the hills the moment they spoke of gods and avatars, they had nothing.
"He can help" is all Marc could offer.
"Help with what?"
"Fixing your problem. Maybe."
You picked up an alternative energy magazine sitting on the coffee table, one of several similar titles. "Which problem are we talking about, exactly?"
"The stealing."
"Getting those guys off my back or the, uh, compulsion?"
"Both, hopefully."
"I don't need a shrink."
Marc pinched his nose. "Does this look like a therapist's office?"
"No, but it could be a trap."
"Are you always this suspicious of people?"
You snorted. "Aren't you?"
"She has you there," Steven quipped, his image moving in the reflective surface of the coffee table.
