S1E1 - WE ONLY SEE EACH OTHER AT WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS
THINGS WERE CHANGING in the Hargreeves family household. Number Six, Ben, died a tragic death, sending the family into a downward spiral. Angel didn't come out of her room anymore. She skipped training, skipped family meals, and only allowed Klaus and Grace to enter. The last time she remembered leaving was for her dear brother's funeral. Sir Reginald Hargreeves was livid and demanded she come out, but she, of course, refused and slammed the door in his face every time.
Luther and Allison, Number One and Three, didn't hang out as much as they used to. The things they had kindled for each other had been extinguished, washed away by the sad emotions they felt for their brother. They felt bad, but couldn't decide if they wanted to continue their charade, but it was the only thing on their mind. The two would lock eyes across the table from one another and would smile, but would be shot down by Sir Hargreeves' cold stare.
Number Two, Diego, went on crime watches, regardless of their regular missions. He scoped out the city during the night to watch for burglaries or murderers as he listened in on a police radio. He wasn't very close to Ben, but he'd felt guilty as if he knew there was something more he could've done — that they all could've done.
Klaus' powers only grew more painful and powerful as time went on. He talked to Ben occasionally and helped Angel talk to him too. When Angel stopped coming out of her room, Klaus had felt like he lost his best friend. He wanted nothing more than for her to be okay, but with all the pain she had experienced, he knew there was something indefinitely wrong.
Number Five didn't go by anything, but Angel liked to call him Willy. Not only because he's the smallest of their incompatible group, but also because he was a dick. The rest of the Umbrella Academy students called him Five, though. He never got to be named by Grace as Five had disappeared 16 years ago after a heated argument with their father about time travel. He felt he was ready for it, but Sir Reginald would have nothing to do with the conversation. Instead, he would say that time travel was nothing but "a toss of the dice."
Number Seven, Vanya, as Grace named her, was sad about her brother's death, too. She doesn't have powers like the others, so she didn't go on missions. Nevertheless, she tried to bring light to the situation by being friendly with all her siblings, but they would shoot her down and she would walk away melancholically.
As for Number Eight, Angel's shadow friend came back ever so often but decreased in frequency as time went on. She started to experience migraines which became a weekly thing and then grew into a daily thing. Reginald began to experiment on her, causing them all to disappear. She would repetitively ask her father what was causing them, but he never gave her an answer.
Finally, tired of his escapades, she snuck into his office to look around. She searched through piles of paperwork that were neatly stacked on his desk. Handwritten notes were piled in ornate folders in the filing cabinet. Clamoring through every filing drawer, she almost gave up, until she saw the list of her siblings' names. Number One, Number Two, Number Three... she began to sift through them, finding her file.
In Reginald's cursive handwriting, he wrote in big words to describe the girl. Reginald called her a "Demon" because of the shadow figure that followed her everywhere. His experiments to bring the said figure to life were a failure, as something else "astonishing" happened. Angel rolled her eyes at the word but kept reading.
"Number 8 - The ability to control wind and air around her, also has a Chi Manipulation ability," Reginald wrote."7/21/2005."
