Dazai pov

I watch Chuuya drive away in his car. I messed up. I think he thought I was asleep when I got up. Really, I was awake the whole time. I just didn't want to let go. I turn away from the parking lot and start walking in the general direction of the agency. You messed up, Dazai. He'll probably never look at you the same now. Trying to rekindle your friendship is pointless. I keep thinking back to the picture he had of us 4 years ago. It's nice to know he missed me too. Leaving him was the hardest part of leaving the Port Mafia.

Whatever. I can't spend all my time thinking about him. I actually have a life, you know. I need to focus on being a good role model for Atsushi. I want him to be a good person when he gets to be my age. I need to be more responsible for his and the other younger members of the agency's sake. It's just sometimes I feel so worthless. Like the smallest speck in the universe. Like nobody cares. I round a corner and reach the agency. I decide to get some coffee at the cafe downstairs before heading up. I sit down at my normal booth.

"The usual, Dazai?" the kind old man behind the counter asks.

"Yes, please." I reply, smiling at him. Ok, Dazai, channel the good vibes. You have to be responsible, which means no flirting with the waitress. When the waitress comes, I thank her and quietly sip my coffee instead of asking her if she wants to commit suicide with me as usual. She looks a little surprised but she smiles and walks away. Nailed it. I finish my coffee and head upstairs.

The office is a complete mess. Papers are flying everywhere. Kunikida is typing furiously on his computer, glaring at the screen like it just committed mass genocide. Atsushi, Yosano and Kenji are talking in a corner, all looking stressed. Kyouka, Naomi and Tanikazi are looking at something on a computer. The only person who seems unbothered is Ranpo, who is sitting at his desk, eating chips. Atsushi runs up to me.

"What's going on?" I ask, genuinely confused.

"The president," Atsushi says, clearly freaking out "is being blackmailed."

"Blackmailed? By who?" I ask, very confused now. "What do they want?"

"They're threatening to reveal personal information about the president if he doesn't send them information on the agency."

"Have you guys figured out who's blackmailing him?" I ask. The president appears suddenly in the doorway of his office. I swear to god I can hear music playing every time he appears. It's so weird.

"We've traced the emails, and it looks like it's someone from within the Port Mafia."

"Really?" I ask. Atsushi nods.

"Yes, we're still deciding what we should do about this, but-" Ranpo snorts from his chair.

"Are you all actually stupid?" He asks.

"What." Atsushi replies.

"I mean, it's literally so obvious." Ranpo continues. "The Port Mafia doesn't really have any good reasons to blackmail us. We never bothered them. We're being set up. Someone is trying to get us to attack them. In fact, that someone has already convinced them that Dazai is blackmailing them. They're on their way right now to capture and interrogate him."

"What?!" Every gasps in unison. Even Kunikida looks up from his computer. Ranpo nods.

"Yup, which is why Dazai is going to let himself get captured in hopes to explain the situation to them. If they're doing an interrogation, they likely might have a lie detector involved, which is great for us because Dazai is actually innocent."

"Figures I have to be the one to get captured." I roll my eyes.

"Well, they're coming for you anyways." Ranpo replies. "So you better get ready." He sits back down in his chair and continues eating his chips.

"So the goal here is to get captured and convince them that I'm innocent. Then what?"

"Then we go after the real culprit." The president replies.

"Ok." I shrug. "I'll be back in a bit. I don't know how long this will take."

"Be careful!" Atsushi calls after me.

"Yeah, try not to get yourself killed!" Kunikida adds. I wave my hand at them and walk out of the agency.

It doesn't take long for them to find me. I'm only a few blocks away from the agency, on a quiet street, walking as carefree as I can when I feel a knife at my throat. Gin.

"Don't move." says a voice. I look up to see Akutagawa in front of me. "You're blackmailing Mori. And you're gonna pay." he smiles. Before I can reply, Gin presses a pressure point on my neck and I'm knocked out.

...

When I come to my senses, I'm chained to a chair in a dimly lit room. There is a table in front of me with another chair facing me. There are two guards in the room, one on either side of me. Pfft. I could break out of here in a minute, give me a break. I just hope somebody comes soon and we can make this quick. Right after I think that, the door opens, and a familiar redhead in a stupid hat walks in, scowling.

"Oh. Figures you would have to be the one to interrogate me." I say, frowning.

"I hate this just as much as you do," Chuuya growls back, "so let's get this over with quickly." He places a small black box with a wire sticking out of it on the table. One of the guards picks up the wire and attaches it to the side of my head. A lie detector. Perfect. Chuuya sits down across from me and leans back in his chair, crossing his arms.

"Well, we already know that you did it, so I really don't see what the point here is, but here goes anyway. Why are you blackmailing Mori?"

"I'm not."

"I didn't ask you if you were or not, I asked you why, dumbass."

"Well, I really can't tell you why if I didn't do it." His scowl grows bigger.

"Fine then. I'll humor you. Did you blackmail Mori?"

"No." The box makes a dinging sound. Chuuya glances at it and then back to me. He looks confused, and it's hilarious.

"Are you sure this is working properly?" He asks the guard on my right. The guard nods. "Are you sure you didn't blackmail Mori?" He asks me again."

I roll my eyes. "Yes, I'm sure." The box dings again. Chuuya picks it up and shakes it. Nothing happens.

"Alright then, fine. If you're not blackmailing Mori, then who is?"

"I don't know." I say "Our president is also being blackmailed, and at first it appeared that he was being blackmailed by the Port Mafia, but upon further inspection, someone is setting us up and trying to get us to fight each other." The box dings again.

"Well then," Chuuya smirks at me, "I guess there's no point in keeping you captive, then."

"Nope." I reply, quickly breaking the bonds holding me, and jump up, knocking out the two guards before they can respond. I pick up the gun one of them was holding and point it at Chuuya. He continues to smirk at me and stands up.

"Well, I guess if you're not guilty, then you're free to go. I'm talking to Mori about this." He turns and sweeps out of the room. I smile before tucking the gun into my coat and heading out after him.
