The next day, they were standing next to a grave, Marlow kneeling in front of it. "This man's name was Gunpei Ikari. But you take away the uniforms and the war, and he became my brother. And we swore we'd never leave each other behind. Let's get off this island." Marlow spoke, tears rolling down his cheeks for his fallen friend.
Once they were on the boat, they did some last work. Y/N and Slivko were sitting next to the engine again. Suddenly, a wave of electricity cursed through them, making them jump away from the engine.
"Ow! Not yet!" Slivko screamed, helping his sister to stand up. "Prime the lines." Conrad ordered, making Slivko let out a stressed "Yeah, yeah, yeah." before doing what he was told.
It took them three tries until they got the engine to work properly, making them all let out relieved laughter. Mason was the first person to notice the tribe's people, standing at the edge of the river.
Marlow walked up to them. I guess this is goodbye. Thank you. If you're ever in Chicago, look me up, I guess." Marlow chuckled, though one could tell how tough this moment was for him.
The boat left the village and went over the river. Y/N was standing next to Conrad at the front of the boat with his hands around her waist. Soon, they were joined by Marlow and Slivko.
Later on, Slivko was sitting on the roof of the boat, looking down at Marlow. "I got a wife. Had a wife. Have a wife? Guess I don't know anymore. We got hitched right before I deployed. Got a telegram from her the day before I got shot down. She said we just had our baby boy. I got a son out there. Grown man I've never met." Marlow told Conrad, Mason, Y/N and Slivko.
Y/N and Mason smiled at him sadly. They couldn't imagine what he went through and what he was going through right now, and they didn't ever wanna know how it felt.
"Yeah, she definitely thinks you're dead, man." Slivko mumbled. Conrad slapped the bottom of the roof, warning Slivko to be quiet. "I'm just saying." Slivko shrugged.
"You don't know that. You'd be surprised how long people wait." Conrad stated, slightly glancing at Y/N. "Ah, truth is, I don't expect them to be waiting. I'd be fine either way. I just want one last chance to see them. That'd be good enough for me." Marlow spoke.
"We're gonna get you home." Y/N promised, looking at Conrad who had promised the same thing to her. Suddenly, a voice on the radio Slivko was holding could be heard.
"Fox Five, come back. Is anyone out there?" she could hear Mills' voice. "Hey! This is Fox Five! We hear you. Yeah! We're on a boat. We're on a boat headed up north on a river." Slivko said into the radio.
"A boat? Where'd y'all get a boat from?" Mills asked, confusion evident in his voice. "We met this, like, crazy Santa Clause, time-traveller guy from World War Two. You'll meet him." Slivko explained.
"What kind of boat y'all got?" Mills wanted to know. "It's more of, like, a plane than a boat, really. Let's call it a 'ploat'. We're on a ploat." Slivko explained to Mills.
"We need their location, Slivko." Conrad reminded the young soldier. "Send up a flare so we can find you." Slivko ordered. "Roger that, Fox Five." Packard's voice could be heard before they saw a red flare going up in the sky.
"I repeat, we have a visual. Two klicks to our north." Slivko informed the Colonel. "Roger that, Fox Five. Fox One out." Packard said before the line cut.
Everyone started cheering, Conrad hugging the older Slivko. Suddenly, Nieves was pulled into the air by some kind of birds that were flying over the ship.
Conrad and Slivko ran up to the front of the boat with guns in their hands, trying to kill the birds but it was useless. Y/N looked away as she heard Nieves' pained screams.
Conrad walked up to her and pulled her close to his chest, trying to calm her down and drown out the noise. She gripped his shirt tightly in her hands. "It's okay. You're all right." he whispered to her.
They went off the boat, waiting for Packard and his men to arrive. Y/N and Slivko prayed that their friends would be all right. They couldn't bare losing them.
"Their flare was only two klicks north. They should be here soon." Conrad said, looking at the pond in front of him. "Unless they were eaten by something that's bigger than us." Mason mumbled from beside Y/N, earning a slap to the arm from the older Slivko.
Suddenly, they could hear twigs snapping in the forest around them, only to see Packard and his men approaching them. "Oh, holy shit!" Slivko exclaimed.
Both siblings stood up to greet their friends, happy to see them alive. "Slivko!" Mills exclaimed before pulling the soldier in a hug. "It's good to see ya, girl." Cole told Y/N before hugging her, letting go to hug Slivko while Y/N hugged Mills.
She went back to stand beside Conrad, who immediately put his hand around her waist. The gesture didn't go unnoticed by Mills and Cole, whom Y/N was like a sister to.
She'd always had a soft spot for Mills, The 21-year-old was only two years older than her brother, so she'd always seen him as her brother as well.
Cole was in his 40's and, despite her being only 28, the two of them always had a great relationship. He didn't have any siblings, so having Y/n as his "sister" was truly a blessing.
"You've been here since World War Two?" Packard asked Marlow who had introduced himself to the Colonel. "Yes, sir. I miss the parade?" Marlow chuckled.
"I'll be damned. Snap to, Lieutenant." Packard told Marlow, the both of them saluting. "We'll bring him home, sir. If we follow this river, we'll make it to the boat, and we'll make it to the north shore in time." Conrad explained, pointing in the direction where the boat was at.
"That sounds good. But we're not leaving yet. Still got a man out there, Conrad." Packard explained. "Wait a second. You got someone out there?" Y/n asked.
"Chapman. He's with the downed Sea Stallion just west of here." Packard said, turning to the older Slivko. She eyed him suspiciously, wondering if that was the only reason why he wanted to go there.
"West? We can't go west! That's where the skull things live. We have an old saying here. 'East is best, west is worst!' That's why we say it. You know, southwest... we could talk about that. But you're gonna need a lot more guns if you're gonna go west." Marlow said.
"Guys. I think that we should listen to Marlow. This is crazy." Mason spoke up. "Hey. Your job is finding lost men, right?" Packard asked, turning to Conrad.
"Okay, sir. But if we reach that position and he's not there, we don't send out a search party. We're back here by nightfall, understood? In twenty-four hours, we have to be on the other side of this island." Conrad spoke. Y/N and Mason groaned in annoyance, not believing it's a good idea to do so.
"Roger that. Hear you loud and clear. All right, you heard the man. Moving out in ten." Packard told his men. "Don't forget to tell me this is a bad idea." Conrad said to Mason.
"This is a bad idea." she mumbled. Y/N stood up and walked towards the boat, sitting down at the edge of the river. She knew it probably wasn't safe, but she didn't care.
She heard footsteps behind her, turning around to see it was Conrad. "Are you all right?" he asked, sitting down next to her. "So far." she spoke, not looking at him.
The two of them sat in silence until he took her hands in his. "Let's get back to them before they leave us behind." Conrad laughed, standing up and offering her his hand to stand up as well. The two of them walked back to the group with their fingers interlaced.
