I awoke the next morning with a knock on my door. I heard David yelling for me and grabbed my shoes and opened the door. David stood there, his eyes wide and fearful.
"Four men are protesting about becoming knights, saying how unfair it is that the women don't have to learn to fight, especially since you are a woman and were a knight. Men think the women should fight alongside. I heard thuds and looked at David and grunted and ran down the stairs as fast as I possibly could and out the door and followed the noise sprinting as fast as humanly possible. When I approached the group of people I saw a woman lying on the cement covered in blood.
"Enough!" I screeched as loud as I possibly could. The men spun on their heels to face me and I clenched my jaw.
"Liam, please escort this woman to the infirmary." Once the women and Liam were away I looked back at the men.
"What is wrong with you!" I demanded. "We are supposed to be a people, a team, we are not supposed to be killing each other, we are supposed to protect each other."
"We don't think it is fair that the men have to fight while the women stay in the safety of their own homes." A man spoke up.
"You think they are safe? No one is safe! Not a single one of us is safe. And if we spend all of our time murdering each other what do we have left but a bunch of scraps for Prophis to sort through." I bit out.
"I know we are all scared and want this war to be over, but think of your wives and your children, what would they think of what you are doing? I don't know how to be queen, I am a fighter and a warrior but we are about fairness in this kingdom so the women who can't and don't want to fight don't have to. The men who can't and don't want to don't have to. But I am asking for the future of Umbris for everyone who wants a future to help fight this war. We can't do this if we are a separated kingdom and people. My father and mother spent their lives creating this kingdom and I will not disappoint them by letting Prophis destroy it. So I am asking people to fight. And I will not sit on the sidelines while I watch my people fight. I will fight side by side with all of you. We need to be United and be one team and kingdom. I know it's hard and I know all of us are terrified about the future. But the future is up to us. It is not up to Prophis to tell us where our future lies. My parents died protecting this kingdom and I am prepared to do the same. So please anyone who is willing to risk their lives for our kingdom please fight." I stopped clearing my throat.
"Some of us want to fight as well." A woman said coming out from one of the large houses.
"Then it shall be so. Any man and woman who wants to fight shall. Training starts today at noon, any able bodied person who wants to protect our kingdom will meet in the center of town and any woman or man who wants to learn to tend to wounds meet Liam in the south courtyard under the tan tent." Everyone nodded and I looked over my people and they all bowed their heads. I looked over to see Liam standing against a tree. I nodded towards him and he nodded back. I spun on my heel and walked back inside the castle. Instead of putting my dress on I grabbed my leather pants and white tank top and my bow and arrow and my hilt and sword. If my people were learning to fight I would be there to help. When I walked out of the castle David whistled and I smacked his shoulder.
"There is the Serena we know and love. You plan to join our training?" He asked.
"If my people are willing to fight then I will help them and show my people that I am one of them." David nodded and I followed him to the center of town where bags of sand hung from wood posts made by my brother and wood swords and ropes off areas for sparring.
"Hello everyone, thank you for joining us today for the first day of training. We will be Joined by queen serena herself. She will show some techniques and tricks that have helped her grow as strong as she is right now. We will begin with the bare minimum sword swings." Once he finished I stepped up.
