"The fuck...?"
Wilhelm quickly broke away from Simon.
They both looked a crying mess.
"Hide," Wilhelm hissed quietly under his breath.
Simon nodded fervently, looking around the room for some form of an escape.
"The bathroom. Close the door," Wilhelm whispered.
Simon stood up from the bed, careful not to make a sound.
But before he made his way into his hiding place, he brushed his warm thumb across Wilhelm's cheeks, wiping the tears away.
Wilhelm involuntarily closed his eyes at the soft touch.
"WILHELM! OPEN. THE. DAMN. DOOR!"
The sharp voice broke the boys out of their trance.
Simon hurriedly ran into the bathroom and shut the door.
Wilhelm cleared his throat, crossed the room, and unlocked the door.
The Queen burst in, rage painting every feature on her face.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!" she shrieked.
Her hair was standing almost upright, and her makeup, for once a change from her usual over the top, cakey look, was smudged all over her face.
Wilhelm internally cringed. He knew he had a lot of damage control to do.
"Mom. It's not the end of the world-" he started as calmly as he could before he was rudely interrupted.
"Not the end of the world my ass!" The Queen rarely swore. "We had everything covered up nicely! Sweden believed us! But now- that- that pesky BOY ruined it all for us once again. You realize that your whole country now sees you as a liar?"
Anger filled Wilhelm's blood at Kristina's slightly degrading comment about Simon. His Simon.
It wasn't even particularly evil, but something about the tone of voice she said it in made him absolutely furious.
"Maybe this is a good thing," Wilhelm said quietly, more to himself than anyone else.
"GOOD?!" HOW COULD THIS BE GOOD?!"
"Now Sweden finally sees their Crown Prince as what he is... a lying douchebag. At least they know the truth now."
His own mother didn't even object at his self insult.
It made Wilhelm's heart break a little. So she agreed...
Fuck it.
She already hated him.
Why not add a bit to the hate?
On a whim, Wilhelm crossed the room quickly, before he had time to change his mind, and whipped open the bathroom door.
Simon toppled through it, clearly previously leaning all of his body weight against the door to listen in on the conversation.
Wilhelm caught him in his arms before he hit the hard wood floor.
Kristina's mouth fell open.
"How dare-" she began but Wilhelm cut her off with a raise of his hand after he gently placed Simon back on his feet.
"Stop," he said calmly. "I don't want to here it. If you ever talk badly upon Simon again, I will make a point of never speaking to you again. Clear?" Wilhelm didn't even wait for her acknowledgement before continuing. "Mama, I love Simon. And I want to have a relationship with him. WITHOUT HIDING!" he emphasized.
The Queen's eyes, if possible, grew rounder and more surprised than before.
She looked between her son and the boy she found to be the one who ruined the precious balance in her life before saying:
"You disgust me."
...and leaving the room.
-
Wilhelm and Simon stood motionless for many beats, seemingly stunned into silence.
Her words left an empty chill to the room- a reminder of her cold, loveless heart.
And Wilhelm's own felt like it was being sliced open.
Bits of it - perhaps halves - were being cut out by a blunt knife.
It destroyed any section that may have read 'family.'
He didn't have one of those anymore.
Wilhelm couldn't think, he couldn't speak, he couldn't move, he couldn't feel-
...until he could feel.
Simon's arms wrapped around him.
And for a split second, something subconscious told Wilhelm to push him off.
But he didn't- instead leaning into the touch before turning to face Simon and properly hug him back.
A wet spot formed on the shoulder of Simon's sweater.
But Wilhelm was too submerged in his own grief to feel embarrassment.
And Simon wouldn't want him to.
This-
This was comfort at its finest.
Maybe Wilhelm didn't have a mother.
But he certainly had a lover.

Author's Note:
So family drama... ew :(( It had to be done. I mean, we already hated Kristina, so why not add a little more flame to that fire?
Really though- I felt this chapter was very necessary to show how Kristina consistently puts the crown above her own son- caring more about her public appearance than Wilhelm's happiness.
Unrelated, but on a very serious note:
If any of you are on twitter and have checked it today, you may have seen a very concerning and frankly horrible thing trending concerning Young Royals. I will not go into detail because I do not want to spread it, but PLEASE do not encourage what has been happening. It is so wrong, awful, and quite frankly disrespectful to the Young Royals actors.
Additionally, there has been more and more sexualization of the actors, and I would like to say that it needs to stop. There is a huge difference between thinking someone is hot and the DISGUSTING messages that have been posted online.
Let's fight this evil together. Can you imagine how horrible it would be if you were an actor for YR, opened up your social media, and this is what you see?
Be a good person, unlike much of humanity < 33
