Chapter Twenty-Seven

The cold air burned against Simon's checks.

He started to run, no destination in mind, just purely running.

Something was subconsciously chasing Simon. Something both scary and wonderful, evil and heavenly. It was some distorted form of Wilhelm in his mind. That boy drove him crazy, making his mind spin in all sorts of unwelcome circles. Simon picked up the pace into a sprint.

The pain in Simon's throat and legs only made him push himself harder. Pain, at least, was a replacement to the numbness in his heart. It felt liberating.

There was no one else out here on the still winter night. Just Simon and his thoughts. At last, there wasn't anything to stop Simon from running infinitely until he died from the agony.

Except-

A tree stump. A f*cking tree stump.

Simon's palms were face down on the rough gravel before he even knew it, blood pouring out of them like a steady river of red.

His face, torso, feet, hands, arms, legs, hell- even his a*s seemed to be screaming out from the connection with the torturous ground.

"F*ckkkkk," Simon groaned softly as he sat up slowly and took in his surroundings.

He hadn't realized how far he had gotten.

The Hillerska grounds had long since disappeared, and they were replaced by clean looking meadows, bright green even under just the moonlight.

It was beautiful, and Simon wished he could stay forever, avoiding all his problems. Avoiding Wilhelm.

But Simon couldn't. He must get back to the safety of his school.

The only problem... he was lost.

-

Wilhelm tried to wipe the steady flow of tears off his face as his phone rang an all too familiar tune.

"It takes a fool to remain sane..."

Yes, Wilhelm had made that song his ringtone. He really was head over heals in love.

"Simon?" Wilhelm said into the phone after seeing who was calling.

"Uh yeah, hi Wille," came the muffled reply. "I'm sort of lost."

"YOU'RE WHAT?!" Wilhelm shouted.

"No use yelling about it, trust me I know it's bad. You can at least help me?"

"Yeah, yeah okay," Wilhelm replied, trying to keep the volume of his voice in check. "Where are you?"

"Well if I knew I wouldn't be lost, dumba*s," Simon said humorously.

Wilhelm didn't respond for a pause, trying to pretend that he wasn't silently cackling at the joke. "Okay genius. Can you describe the area?"

"Uh meadows. Green meadows. And that's really all. It's strange really that there aren't any flowers or weeds here, purely grass..." Simon's voice trailed off in wonder.

Wilhelm let out a loud sigh of relief. "Thank f*cking god."

"You know where I am?!"

"Yup!" Wilhelm replied happily. "Erik used to take me there..." Wilhelm's voice began to sadden at the thought of his late brother.

"Wille. Breathe," Simon said calmly, knowing without seeing that Wilhelm's anxiety was starting to creep into the blonde boy's mind.

Wilhelm took one, two, then three shaky breaths. "Thank you, Simme."

Simon smiled through the screen. He only had a weakness for nicknames when it was coming from Wilhelm. "You're welcome," he said softly before continuing: "Now get your a*s over here to save me."

This time, Wilhelm didn't stifle his laugh.

-

Wilhelm speed walked to the meadows followed by Malin. He knew a shortcut, so it only took about ten minutes.

Simon was lain face down on a large hill.

Chuckling to himself, Wilhelm stood directly above the curly haired boy and turned him over, revealing Simon's face.

"What the actual F*CK!" Wilhelm shouted at the sight of all the blood.

"What?" said Simon, already forgetting about his little incident.

"You look..."

"Hot?" Simon offered.

"Like you got run over by a bus," finished Wilhelm. "But that too," he added.

Simon giggled, trying to conceal the small blush finding its way onto his injured cheeks.

Wilhelm made a show of extending his hand out to Simon to pull him up.

Simon wiggled his eyebrows at Wilhelm before accepting.

Once on two feet again, Simon winced.

Wilhelm gasped in sympathy. "What happened?" he asked.

"Oh my gosh don't make fun of me if I tell you," Simon replied apprehensively but not without a smile playing on his lips.

"Mmm can't promise anything."

"I... tripped... on a tree stump."

"A f*cking tree stump did this to you?!" Wilhelm howled with laughter.

"I TOLD YOU NOT TO LAUGH!" But Simon was laughing too.

"Alright my injured baby, come here," Wilhelm said after the giggles subsided.

Simon raised his eyebrows at the 'baby' but leaned into Wilhelm just the same.

Wilhelm gave him a light squeeze of comfort, not wanting to hurt him any further, before lifting Simon off his feet and into Wilhelm's arms.

Simon, at this point, was used to Wilhelm carrying him, so he simply smiled.

Malin began to lead the way back to Hillerska and the boys followed, Simon snug into Wilhelm's chest.

Wilhelm couldn't pretend that holding Simon while walking quite a distance wasn't difficult, but it was all worth it to help his curly haired angel.

Without stopping his steady pace, Wilhelm pressed a soft kiss into Simon's hair, unintentionally causing Simon's stomach to erupt in butterflies.

Suddenly, Simon couldn't remember any reason to be angry with Wilhelm. That's why Wilhelm was so dangerous to him: even a small gesture of affection could manipulate Simon's mind in any way the blonde boy wanted.

But Simon loved him anyway. Sh!t- LIKED. No- uh- er- CHRISTMAS!
