"Man I sure hope I find something to eat soon, my stomach hurts really bad"
A boy with blonde hair, blue eyes, and no older than 5 was walking through the woods, scavenging for food. His breathing was labored, his clothes torn in places. His arms, and face covered in grime and dirt. He smelled horrible, and looked worse. He sighed in frustration, and kept trudging on. He looked on trees, underneath roots, on fallen logs, rocks, in the grass, and in streams. He was trying to find something edible to eat. Mushrooms, berries, fruit, fish, anything at all. At this point he was willing to eat the bark off the trees, but is holding out to hold on to whatever shreds of dignity he had left. Shaking his head of the distracting thoughts, he kept searching. Four hours later, and the only thing he could find was two apples, and a lizard. He decided that its better than nothing, and started a small fire. He gutted a lizard with a kunai he found in a fenced off training ground filled with giant trees, and terrifying creatures. He grabbed a stick, and carved it into a roasting spit. He speared the lizard and started cooking. He thought back to this morning when he heard the villagers outside his apartment, if you can call it that. He had leapt from the bed, and out a tunnel underneath his bed.
He snuck out of the alleyway, watching for an opening. He heard his door break, and people cheering for his "punishment". He bolted from the alley, and through the shadows of the houses. He snuck out of the village, into the forest, where he found his hidden camp. Yes camp, this wasn't the first time he's had to do this. He considered himself very lucky, and very unlucky. Lucky that he's been able to slip away, unlucky because he's the only one to receive such treatment. As he was reminiscing, he turned the lizard over. He pondered why he was the only one to receive such sustained, and chronic cruelty. As far as he can tell, he's been beaten, or scorned, since he was able to walk. After which he was harshly thrown out of the orphanage. He hears people calling him a monster. A demon that took loved ones, and friends from people of the village. He can only think of the nine tailed fox, as it's the only recent demon, or monster that has anything to do with the way the villagers behave. For the love for all that's good though, he couldn't figure out why they tie that to him. He's tried asking the shinobi of the village, even the Hokage, but they usually deflect the questions. He sighed in frustration while slowly dragging his hand down the side of his face. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
When he did he smelled something akin to burning food. His eyes snapped open, and lo and behold, the lizard was burning. Without thinking, he grabbed the lizard by the body to yank it out of the fire. Sure he ended up burning his hand, but he really wanted to eat. He sighed in pain, and in annoyance. He just sat down and calmly ate his food, and watched his hand heal rapidly, something he also couldn't for the life of himself figure out. When he finished his food, he looked at the sun to find it to almost be noon. He stood up, and wiped his hands on the grass. He doused the fire, and slowly made his way to the village gates. As he was walking, something sparkling caught his eye. Confused, and curious he cautiously crept towards the light. He saw a tree with a hole in the side with... a bag? More confused than ever, he grabbed the bag, and opened it. Inside where five books, he grabbed one to look at, and opened it up. Inside was the words "Spartan training", with an armored figure, which had a helmet that has plumage. He put the book back, and ran with the bag back to the Hokage tower. He nearly tripped on every other log, root, or rock getting to the main gate. He dashed through the gates, and beelined to the big tower in the middle of the village. Bobbing and weaving through and around people, he made his way as quickly as he could. He made it to the top of the tower after five minutes of running, and kicked open the door shouting, "Hey old man! Look what I found!" The old man rolled his eyes at what I called him. There was also a Jonin with a mask, and silver hair. He appeared to be reading a book, but in reality he was watching with intent of finding out what was about to go down.
The old kage sighed then spoke in an aged drawl, "What is it Naruto?"
"I found a big bag of books outside the village, it said it is for training, and its for Spartans, whatever that means."
"Hmm, let me see these books, Kakashi stay, I could use your input."
".......Hmm? Oh, sure. Whatever." Kakashi lazily responded. The Hokage rolled his eyes once again, then started reading the five books. An hour later, the Hokage finished reading, eyes widened with shock, and pure awe for what the books entailed.
"Kakashi! Come here and tell me what you think of this!?"
Confused, and at attention, he slowly meandered towards the old leader. He grabs the first of the books. When done he had a contemplative look in his lone eye. He was looking at the books, then at the Hokage, back to the books, then finally at Naruto. He closed his eye, and exhaled deeply. He opened it. This was what he had to say. "I believe that this is a routine to train a soldier of incredible strength, intelligence, and ability to perform the most dangerous of tasks." Naruto and The Hokage both nodded at this. One happy, the other coming with the same conclusion. "But... it is probably the most dangerous, and difficult training I've ever seen. It also has designs for weapons and armor of uncertain quality. I think since Naruto here was the one to find it, he should decide what to do with this." Both Kakashi and The Hokage looked at Naruto, who the first time in a long time, felt nervous and self conscious.
"I... well... what do the books say, how tough is it?" asked Naruto.
"Well..." The Hokage started, "To be frank, its without a doubt the most difficult, and most dangerous training I have possibly laid my eyes on. The physical training is harsh, and I have been ... informed by the books that if you are out of line or fail to complete an exercise, you will be severely punished to maintain discipline."
Naruto looked on in shock towards the books. He was a little nervous, and a bit terrified of what could potentially happen. He also remembered back to a time where he promised to become as strong as possible. He also remembers that he was Naruto Uzumaki, and he was a person who never went back on his word, and always finds a way to follow through. He gained a fierce look of determination, and gazed into the village leader's eyes.
"I Naruto Uzumaki, am willing and determined to do the training. I also accept any punishment the book, or mentor gives me! Believe it!!" With a bow at the waist, he stayed that way, while both Kakashi, and The Hokage looked both proud and a astonished. The both hid there proud smiles, one behind a mask. The other behind his hands. The Hokage chuckled full of mirth, and he cleared his throat, amusement shining clearly in his aged eyes. He then stood.
"It is clear that I cannot sway your decision, and since you mentioned a mentor, I The Hokage, hereby declare that Kakashi take you in as an apprentice!"
Kakashi stared blankly to take a minute to process is what his superior announced. He blink two times, then was about to voice his opinion when The Hokage cut him off. "I know Kakashi, but you're the only one who's also read the books. I would train him, but I'm very busy every single day. However... I will make time in my schedule to oversee the training."
With that Kakashi sighed, then nodded in acceptance, knowing it was true. At least now he can actually take care of his sensei's son, though not in the way he would like, or be in favor of. Alas it was Naruto's decision. So he saluted The Hokage lazily, and left with his new apprentice close behind him. The Hokage looked at a framed photo of The Fourth Hokage, and sighed.
"Old friend, it looks like your son is walking a more dangerous path than we ever thought, but I believe in him. I know he'll pull through, in time."
With that, he drifted towards a window overlooking his village. "I know you're there... Danzo." He said in his most eerily calm, and cold voice.
Kakashi walked with Naruto. He was going to a place he hadn't been in a long, long time. He got a little sad, because this was a place he hadn't been, ever since his father died. It was the only place big enough that could be big enough for what was about to transpire. He cleared his head, and snuck a peek at his new charge. Naruto was walking with his hands in his pockets, staring at the dusty streets, looking more depressed than Kakashi thought possible. He was confused, then his heightened senses picked up the villagers harsh whispers. He got fed up, and released his chakra to scare them away. It clearly worked, as the couldn't have ran away faster. He smirked at them underneath his mask, watching them stumble over each other. Trying to escape his "terrible" gaze. Cowards. He turned to Naruto. He was stunned, with tears about to spill subconsciously out of his eyes. Naruto was a little scared that he'd done something to upset Kakashi. So he shuffled a little, making it as obvious as the sun in the evening sky that he was scared. His new sensei relaxed a bit and spoke out. He pulled out his little orange book. He opened it up, walked over to Naruto while he said, "You know Naruto. You shouldn't allow the hearsay of some villagers who never were smart enough to tell the difference between genjutsu or ninjutsu. If you are to train the way by the books, by me, and make The Hokage proud, you have got to keep your head high, and take everything in stride."
When he stood in front of Naruto, he stared down at him, his dark eye burning his way to his soal. Naruto returned the look, realizing that Kakashi was right, so he stanced up, and nodded without fear. No longer would he let some stupid rumors eat at him any longer. Kakashi, seeing Naruto's resolve, eye smiled, turned around, and continued on. Naruto calmed down, walking without a care for what the villagers had to say. For the next twenty minutes, Naruto and Kakashi walked on the road. They came up to a medium sized house, with a stone brick wall, with black metal gates. Naruto looked at Kakashi in confusion. Kakashi sighed and explained that this house used to be his father's, but since he was deceased, it was his. He just never stayed long, just to take care of it when he actually needed it. He opened the gate and pushed Naruto in. They both walked up the path onto the porch of the house. Kakashi dragged his right hand down the right side of his face, sighed, then went to open the door. When inside he relaxed a bit then turned sharply to Naruto. Naruto was quickly standing at attention, waiting for Kakashi's instructions.
"Listen up, from this moment on, you are my charge, my subordinate. You will do as I say when I say it. You can grumble and complain all you want about it, my word is law, unless The Hokage says otherwise. I will train you the ways of these "Spartans", but I will also throw in shinobi techniques, so you can be more well rounded. Now let's lay down some rules. Starting tomorrow, you will wake up at five, and sleep at nine. Training starts an our after breakfast, which will be according to the books. We will continue training the entire day, only stopping for lunch, and to use the bathroom. You will only speak when spoken to, and only by me or The Hokage. This shall remain either you're fully trained, or outrank me. That is all, clean up for dinner. The bathroom is the first door on the left." Naruto nodded crisply nodded, then went to get cleaned up. Kakashi then started to make food. Fifteen minutes later, Naruto came out with clothes set out for him by a shadow clone of Kakashi's. They both ate in silence, afterwards Kakashi motioned him to follow. They went down to the end of the hall. Kakashi stopped and turned around. He pointed to the room on his right. "Your room." Then to the one to his left, "My room."
Then he went into a closet next to Naruto's room, and came out with a large stack of books. He eye smiled then shoved them into Naruto's arms. Naruto nearly collapsed from the added weight. "You're going to study all of those books before bed. When you're finished, I'll test your knowledge, When I'm satisfied, you'll get more."
Naruto nodded quickly, then went to organize.
Naruto was quick asleep. He was resting comfortably. He never had a bed this nice before, he slept on the ground, even at the orphanage, he only was given a rug, and a worn out, really thin blanket with holes. Alas 'twas not enjoyed for much longer, for Kakashi crept in, then blew on a sports whistle. Naruto awoken to chaos, he jumped in the bed, got tangled up in his comfy blanket, and fell on the hardwood floor. He looked at Kakashi, in confusion, only to see him pointing at a clock. He paled, as he remembered Kakashi's instructions to wake up at five. It's 5:01. He nervously smiled at Kakashi's who raised an eyebrow at him. "I'll let you off once, since this is your first time here, but tomorrow, there'll be hell to pay."
Naruto gulped and flinched at the same time. He nodded, then went to get ready for the day. After breakfast, and a reading session for an hour, they went to the training ground out back to begin training.
When The Hokage said the training was difficult, he failed to mention that it was pretty much pure torment. Kakashi, as soon as they arrived, told him to do push-ups till failure, followed by running as long as possible, until failure. This didn't seem so bad, until Kakashi mentioned he had to do so ten times. Ten. Times. Naruto nearly fainted at the thought of it. He decided to just start, justifying it by thinking: the sooner he did, the sooner it ends. Two hours later, Naruto was winded. Kakashi set him on his feet, but with sit-ups, pull-ups, and farmer carries around the training ground. All until failure. Naruto groaned from discomfort, then did as he told, this went on for another four hours. Turns out his ungodly amount of stamina was a gift, but was quickly turning into a terrible curse. It made it so he was able to grind out the exercises way longer than expected. The worst part? He recovered in record time. After every exercise he would drop like a fly, only be ready for more (in his mind) torture in three seconds. Kakashi stopped him, made him sit lotus position, and focus on meditating. His objective: Unlock all his chakra.
Naruto happily went to work, well after a late lunch of course. For the rest of the day, Naruto stayed that way until it was dinner time. He ate, cleaned up, then went straight into bed. He can only hope he can survive training tomorrow.
