chapter 26 - caroline's fling

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲𝐧

When i return to our dorm room, i find Y/N fast asleep in my bed. I smile at the sight of her sleeping so peacefully. As much as I would love to wake her and tell her i left the prison cell without any charges, we have school tomorrow and it's late. 

There's no room left for me on my own bed, so i climb up to sleep on Y/N's. I've never been on the top bunk before. It's quite cozy. 

After just a few moments, I fall asleep.

I wake up to Y/N shoving me awake. 

"We just slept in through school!" she hisses at me, as soon as i open my eyes. 

Oh god.

𝐘/𝐍

I awoke late into the day. No alarm blaring whatsoever. I wasn't aware of what time it was, but it was strange that i felt well-rested before school. Especially when i had so little sleep the night before. I check my phone to see how much time i have left to sleep, and my jaw drops when I see it's 11 a.m. 

Classes started 3 hours ago. We missed it.

I quickly shook Evelyn awake and started to panic. 

We're not supposed to miss any classes unless we're sick, and I neither me or Evelyn had reported the office of "sickness" yesterday, so we've got no excuse. 

"Relax, Y/N. We'll just say we woke up with a stuffy nose or a cough. Put some blush on your nose to look stuffy." she instructs, and i obey. I put on a loose, warm hoodie even though its not cold outside, just to prove my point. 

Evelyn decided she would say we both were on our periods, and since we've been sharing a dorm and spending so much time together, they synced up, and we've both got sickness due to it. 

It didn't sound very convincing to me, but we had to do it in order to keep a good record. 

So we walked to the main office, and found Mr. Li, the vice principal, standing at the table looking over some papers. 

"Hello girls," he says when he sees us. "What are you doing out of class?"

Evelyn is a much better liar. So I let her do all the talking. I just throw in a cough or a sniff every now and then to really seal the deal. 

The fact that Mr. Li is a male teacher and we're sharing our period stories with him is quite uncomfortable, but Evelyn doesn't even seem to notice. 

Mr. Li is going red in the face, and he quickly dismisses us back to our dorms. 

As soon as we close the door behind us, Evelyn and I's groggy fake faces disappear into a smile. 

"See! I told you we'd be okay." 

I give her a hug. She knows exactly how to deal with my anxiety.

Since we were "sick", Evelyn and I couldn't really do anything that involved leaving our dorm. Which meant i couldn't even see Louis and experience our first day being together. 

And Evelyn couldn't see Aidan, which, to her, was just as bad as not being able to see Louis. Even though they aren't together, they are so cute. 

I really hope one of them confesses to the other soon, because i can't take any more of watching them stare lovingly whilst the other doesn't notice. It's making me want to scream "Just kiss already!" but obviously, I don't do that. 

I'm talking over the phone with Louis and explaining why we didn't show up to class today, and he sighs heavily over the phone. 

L : I so wish i had never met Lilly. 

I laugh at him. 

Y : Me too. 

I look over at Evelyn once i realize she never even told me about what happened last night with Lilly in Mrs. Reed's office. We were so caught up in pulling off being "sick" that we forgot. 

Y : Hey Louis, I'm about to invite you to a facetime call, join it. 

L : Okay...?

He sounds confused, and honestly, I am too. I don't even know why or how this idea popped into my head. 

I walk up to Evelyn, take her phone from her hand, and cut the call with Aidan. 

She looks at me, confused. 

"You still have to tell me about last night!; I'm going to facetime Louis and Aidan. You can tell us now, all together."

Her confusion melts into a grin and a nod, and she says "You're going to love this." 

So i call Louis on facetime, and tell him to add Aidan, because i don't have his number. Still. 

I prop the phone up against the ladder so it shows both me and Evelyn sitting together. 

Evelyn tells us the story, and I listen, wide-eyed. Once she's finished, I say "I can't believe you got away! Lilly must have been so mad!"

"Who's Ryder?" Louis says. 

Evelyn's face suddenly turns all serious. "Caroline dated a boy named Ryder this summer. They met here, during Year 11, and they got together in July, a month after it ended. 

They went to a summer party at Caroline's friends house, and she got so drunk. But she insisted on driving. She ended up getting into a car crash at a stop light. It killed Ryder, and she's got a ruined leg. 

Caroline used to do Cheerleading. Competitively. But she's wrecked her leg, and she might not be able to play ever again."

There's a moments silence on the call, and then Aidan says, "That's absolutely fucked  that she's trying to get with James now." angrily. 

"I know. The least she could do was upgrade." I say quietly. 

"I don't think she ever mourned Ryder. I think she only though of him as a fling."

"There's something seriously wrong with that girl's brain." Louis scoffs. "All she thinks about is boys, Lilly, boys, and getting into trouble. Oh, and also boys."

It feels wrong to laugh after such a serious topic, so we try not to, but it comes out anyway. 

We end the call with the boys, and Evelyn and I both get a ping on our phones. We both reach to see, and see that our amazon packages arrived. 

It's time to decorate this boring little room of ours.
