"Please don't be in love with someone else."Draupadi leaned against the railing of the balcony when a musky scent invaded her sense. She knew he was there yet none of them spoke a word. A long silence engulfed them in a suffocating grip. The sky was dark and cloudy. The opaque shadow of clouds hid the twinkling stars of hope and the shining moon which reminded Arjun of the beauty beside him. They were dragged in a rough patch of life and so was the sky. The blowing winds were harsh and ruthless. Soon enough, the drizzle patted against the leaves, bowing them down because of the force which dropped from the sky. Arjun found the rain comforting but nothing could soothe his burning heart now.
"It's raining," Arjun said and glanced towards Draupadi whose eyes were fixed at nothing in particular.
"I know," She replied in a small voice but was barely audible but did not turn her gaze towards Arjun. "But that won't stop the inevitable."
A numb feeling took over Arjun's heart. She was stubborn but so was he and determined to not let her go, "How will you travel in the rain?"
Even the thought of feeling the cold water on her skin made Draupadi feverish, how will she survive the harsh conditions of the life beyond the palace walls?"You need not worry about it." Her voice was crisp and sharp. She averted her eyes from the scene to the person who once claimed to love her more than anything and anyone. The warmth of his body seeped into hers as she approached him, "You should rather be worried about the upcoming wedding."
It was a whisper.
Barely audible against the sound of howling winds.
But Arjun heard it.
One sentence. Eight words. Forty-five letters.
And it shattered his heart into a million pieces.
"You know you don't need to leave the palace," He said. His eyes could barely keep the unshed tears at bay, "You know I would not be able to live without you." He took a step closer to her and she took two steps back. The distance between them was killing him, "You know I would never be able to forgive myself for the terrible things I've done to you." He took one more step towards her, "You know I won't do this, Krishnaa. Not to you."
"D-Don't come near me," Draupadi's voice cracked. She moved further away from him, desparate to increase the drift between them.
Arjun's lips tipped upwards in a sad smile. Was she really so disgusted of him, that she won't even let him touch her? When did their love break into shards of glass, making both of them bleed? Was their love that weak, so weak that it snapped like a dry twig when a snake slithered on it?
He respected her wish. He dare not take a step closer to her, no matter how much his heart ached to feel the rhythmic beat of her heart thundering in her rib cage when her touched her; no matter how much his hand itched to feel her feather soft skin melt like butter under his caress. How vulnerable she looked! He had done this to her. He had turned the happy, bubbly Princess of Panchal into a crying mess. He had made the most beautiful blue eyes cry the most tears. He had made the innocent soul experience the burning fire of agony, of pain. He had done all of this to her.
