Someone called my name, ''Kira!"

I could sense hands shaking me, their touch on my body. "Kira! Wake up please. Wake up!"  I struggled to open my eyes, groaning as they fluttered open.

I heard a sigh of relief. "She's awake,"  Evelyn said.

"Devon, teleport them back to safe land," the seer instructed.

Wait, Devon?

Evelyn held me as I sat up, but everything was spinning. I held my head in my hands, feeling the pounding in my skull.

"Is she okay?" a feminine voice asked. I didn't recognize it.

"She'll be fine," Devon reassured. His voice still affected me deeply, even though I tried not to show it. The pain in my head persisted, and Evelyn grew alarmed. "Devon, what's wrong with her?" she asked.

I felt his presence before he touched my wrist, likely having teleported. Why did my head hurt so much? "Kira," he called softly, "look at me." I  couldn't. He gently grabbed my other wrist and pulled my hands away from my head. Cupping my face, his touch soothed me. I noticed his exhausted crimson eyes, dark circles underneath. There was also a scar on his face, stretching from his cheek to his jaw. It didn't diminish his beauty, but I wondered how he got it. His intense gaze made me nervous, but I could see the worry and care in his eyes.

"Okay?" he asked, rubbing the back of my hands with his thumbs. I had missed his voice, the way he said my name. But then, the memory of that night flashed back, and I no longer wanted to be close to him.

I moved away, my voice cold as I said, "I'm fine." I saw a flicker of hurt in his eyes before it disappeared.

"Did you see anything, seer?"  the unfamiliar voice asked.

I turned my gaze to her. She was tall, the tallest woman I had ever seen, and muscular. Her black hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she had sharp facial features.

"I can't, Celine. I can't explain the shield blocking me. It's impossibly strong," the seer replied.

What were they talking about?

"Whoever did this didn't want to be traced," Celine said, looking at me with her crimson, snake-like eyes. Her gaze sent shivers down my spine. She turned back to the seer, "If the woman was killed, why was the girl spared? It makes no sense."

Confused, I asked, "What  are you talking about?"

Celine faced me, her eyes still unsettling. "The woman who treated you,"  she said.

"What  happened to her?" I inquired.

She narrowed her eyes, "She's  dead."

I froze, hoping it was a joke. But the looks on their faces told me it wasn't. I turned to Evelyn, demanding answers.

"When I found you, you were unconscious on the floor, and she was...dead. That's why I called everyone," she explained sadly.

I shook my head in disbelief. "That's impossible! I saw her last night!"

"What's the last thing you remember from yesterday?' the seer asked.

I thought for a moment. "She spoke to me, and then she..."

"Kira, she's mute," Evelyn interrupted.

"No , she's not, Evelyn,"  I insisted.

"I've known her for years, Kira. She has never spoken a word," the seer said.

I stood up, shaking my head. "No! No, she spoke to me yesterday."

Disbelief was written on their faces. I turned to Devon, his expression blank. "Devon, what the hell is going on here?"

He shook his head, "I  wish I knew."  Something was off about his tone.

I felt like I was losing my grip on reality.

"I'm a half breed,"  Celine began. I faced her, trying to make sense of everything. "We're much stronger than ten vampires combined, so it's hard to take us down. So, I want to know how my kind was killed so easily." .

I remembered the woman's eyes from yesterday. They were golden, unlike Celine's. She wasn't a half breed. So why did they think she was? Even before her eyes turned golden, they were dark brown. What was happening?

"The seer mentioned a shield is keeping her from seeing what happened to her. It's similar to the shield keeping her from seeing anything about you," Celine explained, her tone accusing.

Did she think I killed the woman?

"Celine, what are you trying to say?"  Devon asked.

She turned to him, "Just that your girlfriend here is keeping something from us, Devon."

Ignoring her insinuations, I asked, "Where's her body?"

Evelyn  pointed behind me, and I turned around. I went pale at the sight of her decapitated head pinned to the wall, a stake protruding from the center. Her body was nowhere in sight, and blood dripped onto the floor.

Tears filled my eyes as I fell to my knees, gasping in horror. "Oh my God,"  I whispered. I felt numb all over.

"Take her to safe land," the seer instructed.

'I can feel their presence around you, Kira. They found you before I could, and they are watching as we speak.'

'I would be long dead before tomorrow, but it's completely worth it.'

Her words echoed in my mind, and in that moment, I knew there was something out there, something greater than I had ever imagined. It had killed her, and for some reason, I felt like it was on its way to me.

Devon wrapped his arms around me from behind, and we teleported away.
