We're about to take a fun little trip back in time 😊
This time, we'll see everything from Evelyn's perspective. She has a lot to share with us.
Enjoy!
~EVELYN~
Kathryn, Kira’s roommate, had raised the alarm weeks ago.
She’d found Kira unconscious in their bathroom. The weird part was nobody knew what was wrong—not the doctors, not the seer, not Devon, not even the water elementals who scanned her body. No one.
Kira had been asleep for two weeks now. It was starting to scare everyone.
This morning, the seer called an emergency meeting. Officials were there. The strongest hunters. And as one of them, I was expected to. The only one missing was Devon.
“Where is the demon?” Celine, a half-breed, asked.
Half-breeds were half vampire, half human, and dangerous as hell. No powers, but faster and stronger than ten vampires combined. I never understood why the seer trusted her and didn’t ask either. Not my place.
“Yes, Evelyn. Where’s your boyfriend?” Lucas, a hunter I couldn’t stand, sneered.
I rolled my eyes, ignoring him. Since I always stood up for Devon and took him as my partner on missions, rumors spread we were an item. Didn’t bother us.
“Evelyn, why aren’t you—”
“Can you shut your hole for once?” Rhoda, a water elemental and one of my few friends, cut him off.
Lucas glared. I smiled at Rhoda.
“I think we should start without him,” the general suggested.
“We can't. He’s a huge part of Safe Land. His presence is important,” the seer insisted.
Almost immediately, Devon appeared.
Thomas, fourth in command, started clapping sarcastically. “Bravo, demon. Quite the entrance.”
The second and third in command were stationed outside Safe Land, so we had to deal with Thomas’s arrogance.
“Thomas!” the seer warned.
Devon ignored him. “Sorry, I’m late.”
His eyes met mine. He gave a small smile. I returned it.
If hell itself had a face, it would be Devon’s right now. He looked terrible: darkness under his eyes, pale, sick. Ever since Kira was admitted, he’d been barely around.
I worried, was it because he trained her? Or something else?
“I’m sure you all know why we’re here,” the seer began. “Kira’s been in the clinic for two weeks with no sign of waking. No one knows what’s wrong.”
Silence.
“I know a half-breed, living far from here, skilled in medicine. I believe she can help.”
“Where?” the general asked.
The seer waved her hand, and the white meeting room shifted, replaced by a dense forest of canopy trees.
I recognized it immediately.
“You can’t be serious,” an official said. “That’s their forest. Any hunter or human who steps inside is doomed.”
I’d heard stories.
The forest was far from Safe Land. Its thick canopy blocked the sun, sheltering vampires. Before the war, earth elementals had created it. Now it was a graveyard. Even the strongest hunters wouldn’t dare go in.
