She approached me and I stepped back, eventually causing her to stop.

"You don't have to be afraid of me, Kira," she assured me.

"I was told you couldn't speak."

She nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "If they find out I can speak, they'll kill me."

I frowned. "Who are 'they'?"

Tears streamed down her face as she replied, "You truly know nothing."

I continued to stare at her.

"Another will come, someone more powerful than the rest, carrying the gift of life and death," she began to move closer. "And we heard the prophecy."

Why did those words sound familiar? She tried to approach me, but I moved several feet away.

She stopped moving again. "I've searched everywhere for you. I always knew you existed."

"I have no idea what you're talking about or who you are."

She smiled through her tears. "You don't have to. But I know you, I've known you even before you came here."

I furrowed my brow, certain that I had never seen her before. Could she be a friend of my mother's? There were times when my mother and I encountered people we knew from before the war.

"How?" I asked.

Her dark brown eyes immediately transformed into a glowing golden color. My mouth fell open.

Suddenly, I remembered everything. Attacking the mirror, the change in my eye color, the mark on my forehead, the mirror returning to normal, the reflections in the mirror, their voices, and then nothing. And now, she looked exactly like the people I had seen in the mirror.

I stepped back even further. "What are you?"

"I am the last of our kind."

"What do you mean?"

Her eyes returned to normal. "I can sense their presence around you. Somehow, Kira, they found you before I could, and they are watching us right now."

She smiled. "But it's okay. I only wish I could guide you, show you the truth, but I can't. If I do, then I would be putting your life in danger. They won't let you live, and if you die," she shook her head, "then the entire universe will perish."

A headache began to form. What was she talking about?

"Wait, who are 'they'?" I asked.

She didn't respond.

I ran my hand through my hair. "You must have mistaken me for someone else. Because I have no idea what you're talking about."

She gave me a sad smile. "You do. I know you do. But you just haven't realized it yet."

I took a deep breath. "I'm so confused," I whispered to myself, but she heard.

More tears streamed down her face. "We all get lost sometimes, Kira, but that's when we have to search deep within our souls for guidance."

What was she talking about?

I observed her. Evelyn had said she was a half-breed, but I felt like she was something else. And for some strange reason, I felt like I knew. What on earth was happening?

"What are you?" I asked.

"I am the last of our kind."

A prolonged silence followed as we continued to stare at each other. Our kind?

"What are we?"

She smiled. "That's the first step in the right direction."

She started walking closer, and this time I didn't move away. She took my hands in hers and kissed the back of my palms.

Looking into my eyes, she said, "It was an honor to meet you. Now I know that if I die, it won't be in vain. Your existence alone proves that we didn't all perish for nothing."

I didn't know why, but I had a feeling that I wouldn't see her again tomorrow.

"You'll figure it out," she said, leaning in closer. "I want you to know that the most beautiful things can also be the most dangerous. Evil can hide behind a facade," she whispered in my ear.

"But sometimes, good can be disguised as evil to lead you astray. Always follow your heart, Kira, regardless of what is in front of you. Good or bad, always trust your heart."

I stared at her as she leaned back. She tucked my hair behind my ear and kissed my cheek.

"I would be long gone by tomorrow, but it's completely worth it," she smiled.

"Why do you say that?"

"Because they will kill me."

"Who are the 'they' you keep mentioning?"

She smiled again. "You'll figure it out, Kira," her gaze fell on the silver necklace Devon had given me, lingering for a moment. "Follow your heart."

She stepped back. "Goodnight."

I didn't want her to leave. There were so many things I didn't understand.

Her eyes landed on the necklace again, then met mine. "Evil hides behind facades, Kira. The most beautiful things are often the most dangerous."

I touched the necklace. Was she referring to it? Before I could think of anything else to say, she turned around and walked away.

I continued to stare at her retreating figure until she disappeared from sight. Still feeling incredibly confused, I entered the room. As soon as I stepped inside, everything went black.
