The explosion of screams that came from outside caused my Mom and I to separate.

Her eyes went wide, and so did mine.

"What was that?" I asked, but I already knew the answer as more screams assaulted my ears.

We were under attack by vampires!

My mom rose, panic filling her eyes.

How did they find us? For God's sake, we were literally in the middle of a forest. How could they have found us?

"Stay here, Kira," my Mother instructed and turned to leave.

I grabbed her arm, halting her in her steps. "Mom, please don't go."

'I can't lose you too,' my heart whipped, I knew I was kidding myself. Hunters had a code, you never backed away from a fight, even if it'll cost you your life.

I could already smell it, death. I could almost see its merciless claws, reaching out to our small village. I didn't want my mom to go out there. I couldn't lose her.

She placed a soft kiss on my forehead.
"I love you, Kira. Don't leave no matter what you hear."

With that said, she left before I could figure out a way that would force her to stay.

I somehow managed to move my shaking form to the window-like structure in my room, moved the curtain a little bit, and peeked outside.

Chaos, absolute chaos greeted my eyes. I couldn't see my mom, but what I did see shook me.

There were bodies of both vampires and hunters on the ground. This was not the first time I was seeing dead bodies, but these were some of the people I sat around the bonfire with, these were... my eyes landed on a familiar figure in the middle of all the chaos. The village head.

For a woman her age, she possessed remarkable strength, tackling two vampires with swords she conjured out of the fire.

I felt relief to know she was okay. Then out of nowhere, a vampire appeared from behind her. She was so busy with the other two that she didn't notice this.

The vampire grabbed her and easily ripped her head off her body.

I gasped and got away from the window as tears filled my eyes. I clamped a hand over my mouth to keep myself from screaming.

I remembered the way she smiled and how lovingly she looked at everyone when she told her stories. I remembered her eyes, but now she was just a memory.

I sobbed silently.

What did we ever do to deserve this? Where was God when you needed him?

I heard the sound of my door ripping open and got up when I saw my mom.

Her hair was unruly, and her dark skin was caked with blood. I knew some of it was hers. My heart ached.

"You're leaving, Kira," she informed me without emotion and walked to where my bag was. She made sure our things were always packed.

"We're..."

"You're leaving!" she repeated, louder and harsher this time, her eyes holding mine as those two words tore at my soul.

"You're not coming with me?" I said in realization and felt more tears roll down my cheeks. "Mom, how can you not come with me?"

Looking unfazed, she threw my bag at me. I barely got a hold of it before she grabbed my arm and guided me out of our hut. I simply let her lead, feeling too numb.
