-Kenny's Pov-

After I finished packing a bag, I decided to go check on Karmen. I'm starting to feel bad for telling her she can't go. I know it's not her fault my friends think she's pretty but I don't want them turning her into the next Wendy.

As I approach her room, I noticed that her door was slightly cracked open. I knock anyway.

"knock knock. Carmen can I come in" I say.

"Yeah, what's up Kenny" I push the door open and enter the room.

I quickly see her close her diary and stuff it under her pillows. I sit on her bed and try to think of the best way to tell her. But, before I could come up with a sentence, she's already talking.

"Look Kenny, I know why you don't want me to go."

"You do?!" I say, scared that she already knows what the guys say about her.

"Yeah. You don't want me at the camp out because you don't want me to make the new kid uncomfortable. I get it." I sigh of relief.

"Right! Of course. That's totally why. I'm glad you understand." I say, standing up and slowly retreating to the door.

"And I completely understand if you want me to stop coming to the sandlot with you guys."

I stop just meters away from the door and turn around.

"Is that what you think?" I ask, concerned.

"I mean, is that not the case?" she says, turning towards her wall instead of facing me.

I walk over to the side of her bed that she was on and sit down next to her.

"Karmen I- I will never, and I mean never, get tired of hanging out with you. You're my big sister for crying out loud. I couldn't escape you if I tried." I say, receiving a quiet chuckle from her.

"How about, when WE get back from the lot tomorrow, we can have a scary movie marathon like old times."

"Sure. That sounds great." She says as she finally turn to face me with a smile.

"Don't you have somewhere to be?" She asks, causing me to look at the clock.

She was right. If I don't get there early, Ham might eat all the mini sandwiches. I get up once again and head to the door. I stop before I am completely out the door and look at her closet.

"Karmen is that my hat?" I swear that girl turned into a road runner as she ran to her closet.

Standing Infront of it in a protective stance, she says, "Hey you really should be going. Don't wanna miss out on those delicious mini sandwiches Mrs. Timmons makes."

I just laugh and walk out the door. I'm glad we had that talk. I could tell that this was really bothering her.

I grab my bag from my room, head downstairs, said goodbye to my Dad before heading outside to the car. Just before My mom could pull out off the driveway, Karmen ran outside and knocked on my window. I rolled it down and both me and my mom just stared at her until she caught her breathe.

"I'm sorry. Give me a second, I just ran all the way from my room. Anyway, here Kenny. Give this to Rodriguez." She says handing me a folded up note. "If you open it you will never read anything ever again." She threatens.

"Ok I won't read it... but can you at least tell me what its about-"

Karmen suddenly cuts me off by pointing down the street and yelling,

"OMG STRAY KITTENS!"

I immediately look the direction she pointed, hoping to see the adorable little baby kitties she claimed were there. Only to be left disappointed by the lack of cats in the street. When I turned back to the window, Carmen had already reached the house and was currently peeking through the curtains. When she realized that I had already seen her, she ran away.

I chuckle to myself. And to think that I'm supposed to be the youngest.

"You ready, honey?" My mom says while checking her hair in the mirror.

"Yep." She starts to pull off from the driveway.

Although the Timmons' live walking distance, It was already sunset and Mom hates for me to be walking alone after dark. It was a pretty silent drive other than the sound of my mother humming along to the song on the radio.

When we pulled up to the Timmons' house, Mrs. Timmons was already outside talking to YeahYeah's mom. This meant my mom was gonna be here a while. these three women gossip more than teenage girls. If anything happens in this neighborhood, I'm sure they already know it.

I grab my bag and walk up to the door. I greet both of the moms as my mom comes up from behind me.

"Now if you need anything, you can just call me on the house phone, alright?"

"Yes, Mom. I know" I sigh, knowing that if I don't do anything now I won't ever make it to the tree house.

"And did you make sure you got everything, you know you can be forgetful sometimes and since Karmen isn't her-" She starts rambling.

"Mom, I'm only gone one night. I'll be fine."

"Right, sorry." She flashes me a smile.

I know she cares a lot but sometimes it's like she cares a little too much.

"The rest of the boys are already in the back. You can go get changed and then join them."

"Thank you you Mrs.Timmons, Goodnight Mom, Mrs. McClellan." I say, before heading into the house before my mom could rope me into another conversation.

I head to the bathroom first to change into my pjs, then I head out back to the tree house to join the rest of the guys. When I get up there, I see The Timmons, Bertram, YeahYeah, Ham, and Benny They all great me as I put my stuff down, before returning to whatever activities they were doing before.

I was going to enjoy those mini sandwiches when I suddenly remembered the note Karmen handed me. I rushed to my back and got the folded piece of paper out of my pants pocket.

"Hey Benny, I gotta show you something." I say, getting his attention.

"What's up man?" he says coming over to me.

I tell him to get closer then when he's close enough, I put the note into his hand.

"Karmen told me to give this to you. I didn't read it because she said If I did, she'd feed my eyeballs to the stray cats or something like that." I watch as he looks at me concerned.

"Dude, I'm kidding. Just open it.

He opens the note hesitantly and reads.

As he reads the note, he kept looking at me then back at the note before he finally folded it.

"Well, what did it say?"

"What did what say?" He was playing dumb.

"The note, stupid."

"Oh it was nothing. Just an inside joke." He says, then he throws it out of the window.

Then he walks away to join another conversation. I didn't even notice that Squints and the new kid, Scott, had got here.

I try to get the note out of my head so that I can enjoy the night but my mind finds it's way back to Karmen.

What were her and Benny hiding?

I hadn't realized that I was being yelled at by squints to move because I was in his way.

I hope I can get through tonight without Karmen.
