Cathy was never a popular person. Always top of all of her classes, the pressure never let up. She had no time for friends, but she had no time for bullies either. She payed no mind to the whispers as she walked by.
Brandishing another perfect score, her parents dismissed it with the wave of a hand. Then, in her room, she sat silently. There was no point in praying.
In the search for a job, employers were never keen on her. Eventually, her parents kicked her out. She lacked the communication skills to do anything. Living on the streets, she would take any offer. So, when a man approached her, holding the hand of a younger boy, she listened well.
Eventually, the little boy was a younger brother to her as well, and the man... she didn't know the feeling. It was her family now. They were always sent for tasks together, the medic, the hacker, the chemist, and the arsonist.
It felt like nothing could split her family. Then she came in. When Kasai called them all together for an announcement, Cathy expected a job. Instead, he came babbling about y/n l/n. Naomi accepted it, Ted accepted it. It was only right for her to accept it too.
It's not like one person could come between their group, right? If anything, the more the merrier. Then Kasai stopped talking to them as much. Ted would rather talk to Kasai over her whenever he could.
She knew it would come, she didn't want to accept it, but she knew. Her family was being torn apart, and all because of y/n. But Cathy couldn't blame her completely. If she did, would she be any better than those she grew up around? She didn't complain, Naomi and Ted always seemed to know what was going on, and in that time, she felt as though she was about as useful as Ted's younger brother.
Even then, Ted always allowed Sai to accompany him. Was she really that useless? It doesn't matter now anyway, the only survivors of their family was her and Kasai. She would never consider y/n as her family after what had happened. But, Kasai still was, and she could not do anything to hurt him, though she already had, seeing as he blamed her for Naomi's death.
What about Cathy though? Didn't Ted and Sai die because of his selfishness? Because he so desperately wanted some random girl? Cathy shed no tears, upon meeting you, she deemed you nice enough, but not someone worth getting everyone else killed over.
Kasai had officially lost it. Cathy started questioning if any of them had ever been truly sane. And what about you? Were you a maniac too? Or did you have a stable job, a loving family, caring friends. Did you have all of the things Cathy never had? If so, why did you deserve them more than her?
Cathy put her mind on hold. She was just unlucky. It was the way things were. It was okay. Her being less lucky than you wasn't your fault, and Cathy recognised that. She still wished that it had been someone else to save Kasai that day, someone he'd never see again.
She knew it was selfish, but Kasai was also being selfish, and he didn't have any good reason, he already had his family. One thing was for sure, Cathy couldn't just blame you for all of this, her bad luck had set in again.
What hurt her was how Kasai was acting. They used to spend at least an evening a week together. The common denominator was obviously Ted, but if Cathy had ended up with Ted, Kasai would've been her best friend. Now she was just a pain to him, only there because there were things he couldn't do.
Cathy thought that after Kasai calmed from the shock of losing Naomi, he would come to his senses, but even after providing medical help and a place to stay, he still treated her like dirt.
"Ichigo, what are you doing?" It was the middle of the night, and there was some weird fumbling noises coming from the corner of the room.
"Shh, go back to sleep, you'll wake up Cathy." You tried to get out of the bed, but your leg didn't help. Ichigo was still fully focused with doing something in the corner of the room.
"Ichigo are you... you know..." your face went red. Ichigo didn't reply, but stood up and sighed, walking back towards the bed.
You could now see a small, blinking, red light in the corner of the room. You almost slapped yourself at what you thought he was doing. But still, what was that for?
"It's fine, it won't go off for another twelve hours." Ichigo reassured, hugging you close to his chest after lying down next to you. Wait, go off?
"Ichigo what did you-"
"Shush, you'll wake Cathy,"
"But-"
"No, unless you want me to drug you, you'll be quiet."
So you clamped your mouth shut. Whatever Ichigo was trying to do, you didn't like it. The fact that he was Ichigo just made you more uneasy.
The eerie red light kept you awake for most of the night, pretty much until the sun came up. You finally felt yourself able to sleep, holding on tightly to Ichigo until long into the day.
Except it didn't quite go that well for you. He shook you awake when the light in the room was pretty much the same as when you had fallen asleep. The likelihood was that you'd only gotten ten minutes of rest.
"C'mon, y/n, we have to move."
As soon as you were half awake, Ichigo moved away from you to start feeling around and putting some things in a bag. Including what looked like a lot of money. "Where'd you get all that from?"
"Cathy had a stash." He didn't slow his packing. In the bag also went matches, a gun, bullets, and what looked suspiciously like a bottle of hairspray. How does the guy even find these things?
"What are you doing?"
"We're leaving. It's not safe to stay with Cathy. Even if we wanted to stay, the place is gonna blow in a few hours."
"What are you thinking?! Cathy-" you began to exclaim, but Ichigo pushed a hand to your mouth to silence you.
"Behave." You reluctantly halted your protest, and followed Ichigo as he creeped past Cathy in the living room, and quietly opened the front door. You snuck one last glance at her, and a horrible feeling settled in your stomach that this might be the last time she wakes up.
When you were outside, Ichigo handed you a ring...
.... Of keys, don't get excited.
"You'll need to drive, since, you know," he grinned, slipping a face mask on and gesturing for you to do the same. "First stop..."
