Zo wasn't playing the song we were supposed to be playing. Her normal smoky R&B meets rock sound wasn't there; it was something else. The song was delicate, as if each note was willing to break her at any moment. As the stage light shone down on her sitting at that piano, it was as if Asher and I weren't there. It was Zoey alone at the piano and the rightness of it was startling. The song was a beautiful choice and her voice was higher than she normally sang, but it worked.

At that moment, the Zo I knew wasn't simply Zo, my best friend from childhood. She was Zoey, the star. All those galaxies we wrote together, rearranged songs, and wrote new games together. We were just orbiting her star. Such a heartfelt delicate sound at the edge of broken but stronger for it. The distance between us grew, but I was so proud of her. When she hit the last note of the song and the piano rang out that final time, the arena was in complete hush. Zo left the stage as her long black hair disappeared behind the curtain. I ran after her.
